there was this dude with dreddies riding his bike for Kalgoorlie to Coolgardie..now this was (and still is) a fairly narrow road, frequented by roadtrains and a multitude of other vehicles.

He was well within his rights and well within the law to be riding there, thing is, he happened to encounter two roadtrains going either way, the three had nowhere to go and he

either fell, was sucked under or got hit by the 2nd boogie. 12 tyres later and he was lying there all broken chewing on his innards that had exited his mouth.

He didn't last long....

Hitting a roo or a wombat just isn't anywhere near as messy, they've got thick hides and tend to stay in one piece, people don't.

Sure cyclists, the law's on your side and you have every right to be on the road, but PLEASE use common sense, there are some times / places that it just

isn't wise to be out riding.....

I understand the problem that cyclists aren't allowed to ride on the

footpath therefore they must ride on the road.

What I don't understand is why cyclists on Beach road (Melbourne) don't

use the bike path that is specifically designated for them?

Here is what beach road looks like every day:

Notice that there is a seperate:

a) footpath

b) bike lane

c) road

This is the only solution.

I think that the problem is that in Australia all cyclists think that they are

all the next Tour de France champion - they even dress in such a way.

In Europe people cycle sensibly. Just compare the two pictures.

The refusal to use the bike lane is only ever due to cars being parked it it. If there's a designated bike lane on the road, I assure you the marjority of cyclists will use it, as it's safer. The dickhead rule applies though, so there's no need to provide examples of when you saw a rider not using this lane.

If there were suitable off-road tracks that were bike-only, they'd surely be used. At the moment, these paths are shared paths with walkers (often with dogs on a leash), joggers, etc. They're also mostly poor construction and not ideal for cycling on. The frustration you get from idiot cyclists, is identical cyclists get from pedestrians on these shared paths.

Trust me when I say it's more annoying having to come to a complete halt to get around a group of people walking across the whole path, then having to peddle your arse off to get going again, than it is to be slowed up and then put your foot down on a peddle to navigate around a cyclist.

I use to work in the city as a courier and as a result of that I can't f*ckin stand the pricks, granted there are a few good ones but like taxi drivers most are f*ckwits.

Guys this incident that happened in Sydney sounds a bit fishy to me, most likely a media beat up because of the Olympic cyclists involved. I don't know that at any stage anyone has said he slammed on his brakes just slowed down because he said he had car problems so he pulled into the break down lane and stopped. If the cyclists are travelling in the breakdown lane then they would have no right of way over him bearing in mind that they were travelling behind or he had just passed them. The fact of the matter is that several cyclists missed the back of the car then others collided most likely because they were travelling to close to each other so those in the middle didnt see what was happening ahead my opinion only as I have not seen the scene. I also believe that it is better to pull into the break down lane to stop than in the middle of a busy highway and safer. I'm not conviced about this one yet, but I have to agree peak hour and large groups of cyclists is stupid but unfortunately leagal in some areas. Down here in the Gong the freeway is marked not for cyclists or pedestrains etc etc and is sign posted as such.

yeh a guy got pissed off an over took 50 cyclist and then slammed on the brakes in front of them

So say the 50 pissed off cyclists. The driver has provided a very different version.

I'm a rider too, but of mountain bikes and I never ride on the road. They should not be banned from the roads, just regulated to quiter roads, and never at peak hour times.

And subjected to the same penalities as drivers of cars, instead of the pissy $50 ones.

I believe that part of South dowling street is as well.

And the riding of bicycles on footpaths is permitted in NSW, when the rider is a child in the company of a parent.
