Hi guys

I'm looking at buying a Caterham as a track/weekend driver. Would anyone have any contacts or suggestions of where I should start looking? I'd much rather buy one within Australia but they seem to be quite pricey even in kit form. If someone could put me in contact with someone or even a local club with members who sell them, that would be great.

The only other option would be to import one in. The states seem to have a few nice ones for sale in the 15k to 20k range and with the current exchange rate, this maybe the way to go. Anyone??

Cheers

Aaron

There is a sweet Python cobra with a 550hp motor, setup for track work for sale at the moment for $45k.

Have a look at MY105 as there have been a few there recently.

sorry to hijack (I'm not really.. that's all I ever do..), but how much would it generally cost per meet to have your own track car?

It's something I would like to do in the next 5 years.

REAL competetive,

$1500 per set of full slick tyres, last between 1-4 meets.

Fuel, $150 (depending on motor size obviously)

Entry fees range between $200-$500 depending on what catagory and what classification the category has.

Factor in consumables like pads (<$200 a set) discs $? depending on what you need, belts and helmets need to be changed every few years, bent panels.

Spares, depends on what you want to carry but we carry a full set of slicks, pads, discs, oils, spoiler, +++ and that is just to a meet, not including what we leave at work.

It really isn't that hard to do, getting started is the main hurdle, once you start everything starts to fall into place, you get more spares, more idea of how to regulate money towards it, and the race meetings aren't generally that close.

If you can afford to start I would recommend it, best to do as someone on the forum has done and buy a cheap car out of Japan. Either that or look in Auto Action as there are generally a few cars in there.

Hi Bonza

Does it have to be a Caterham, or would you consider an original Lotus 7 (many are in better than new condition), Westfield, Birkin or other low volume Clubmans? They're such a simple design many of the low volume ones are very well built and I think they all have potential to fulfil your needs.

Here's a Google search of "Lotus Clubman" which could get you started.

Unfortunately you can't just import a car. It has to be imported via a RAWS (Registered Automotive Workshop) and be eligible under the Register of Specialist Vehicles Scheme.

The Caterham IS eligeble, but it has to be new which means purchasing from the UK to be viable. It is only eligible because it is not currently supplied in to the Australian market in full volume. Also it will only be considered where the vehicle will be used in serious competition, generally at professional level.

You can private import ONLY if you lived in that country for the previous 12 months.

Hate to be the beared of bad news but it has to be purchased from Australia unless you have VERY deep pockets. RAWS agents want a fortune to import.

Not verified but the only RAWS approved dealer I found for this car is...

Caterham Sports Cars (Aust) Pty Ltd

Factory 10/478 Maroondah Highway

LILYDALE VIC 3140

Each RAWS has to apply for each car they wish to import.

Cheers
