I have the CES 3.5" turbo back system on my ute and I have all the same other mods as you. I got 355RWKW's out of it but might get simon to do a retune because I think I would be able to get more out of it. I think its a great system. Looks really good and sounds great to.

hey guys just wanna know what you think. I am waiting on my new fg ute to come in and wanna put an exhaust on it. basicly I am looking more for a nice sound rather than any massive power gain. there is a place in mildura where I live that can fit one for me but its mild steel rather than stainless. is that a bad idea? also dont want that drone so is there any types of exhaust that are better for that? any info would be great cos I dont know enough about mods or anything and dont wanna get ripped off. cheers guys

LOL, forum jockey. What on earth...

I'd write back to him, and say "Hi there Roy. You may not think your a magician, but I beg to differ. You've just made myself, and other potential customers disappear into thin air! Well done! Thanks and regards, Forum Jockey. xoxo"

Hahaha... good call.

I like that one lol.

Exhaust systems are a bit of a sticky issue with our cars.

Alot of the dump pipes I've seen are fine, we have a basically two choices:

A twin pipe dump, which is the best for flow, turbulance and backpressure as the wastegate gasses are fed into the stream thurther down the dump pipe. This is in my view a great way to do it and became popular in the late 90s, so its nothing new, but works very well. The only draw back for us, is the main pipe ( on the dumps I have seen ) is 3inch so no real advantage over stock in regards to flow volume.

look inside the flange at the two opening for each pipe, when they meet the turbo they should seal off from each other and become separte, this will keep wastegate gasses out of the main exhaust flow until they are channeled back in lower down on the dump pipe.

If this was a 3.5-4inch pipe it would be optimum.

The other type is the 4inch which is basically a 4inch pipe, hammered ( yes they use hammers ) to join onto the turbo's flange. The flange is not round, more of an oval that is bigger at the the top. the 4inch pipe is "manipulated" to go around the flange, just as the factory dump does.

The main draw back is wasgate gasses are dumped directly into the main stream and alot of turbulance is created, causing a slowing down of the exhaust wheel. which in turn can add to lag.

The benefit is flow of the main gasses is greatly increased ( 4inch vs 3inch ) which improves top end power and engine breathing.

From this you can see why poeple offten say, a bigger dump will loose low down power but pick up power at the top end. And the smaller dump will be great for down low and throttle responce, but only marginally better in top end performance.

But that's only the dump pipe, of which can have the greatest impact on how the car performs, but the rest of the system must be up to the task.

Turbo motors work differently to NA motors, so its a different approach to design. if your looking for all out power, max flow is what you want, and a full 4inch system is one of the easier ways to go about it.

The exhaust flow from a turbo through the system spirals its way down, rather than just blasting down as from an NA motor, so when there is a transition section, for example 4inch into two 2.5s, this turns into a restriction. All of a sudden the spiralling gasses get split up and can no longer spiral down through the system, so flow speed is reduced, the system starts to back up with pressure (backpressure) and again it builds up on the turbine slowing it down... you can usually feel this as the power peaks hard and smooth, then flattens out through the top end.

So if the system is kept a full single pipe line, the gasses can move down with less restrictions, creating strong free flowing power.

Another over looked thing is the mufflers. There are some nicely TIG welded, polished stainless steel systems that look great, but have mufflers made to a low low cost. The only ones that really work well in regards to flow, are the loud ones... why? Because there's really not much inside them to slow the gasses down and choke the noise. The cheaply made, quiet mufflers, are just made to quiet down the noise, which is why some of these systems work well, and others are so so, and good to a point- as Tunehouse has been showing us with their experiences recently.

Some of the best mufflers come from the states, Magna flow, Dynomax ect are great examples of mufflers that can be reasonalbly quiet and yet flow very well, the Japanese also make some awesome mufflers, HKS, Trust ect, but these come at a higher cost and add to the final systems costing.

370wkws shouldnt be too hard with any of the available exhaust systems, it will mainly come down to tuning and how hard they push the motor, boost and timing wise.

Cheers Rapid.

This is a fantastic write up and should be a sticky in the exhaust section. It plainly expalains everything and puts everything into persepctive. My main aim was to imply I want a hugely powerful car and then tone it back so everything is well and trully comfortable to drive when I want and where I want.

So what I should really be looking at is a 3.5 minimum dump pipe with a seprate wastegate and then maybe a custom exhaust. Magna flow mufflers are cheap at the moment as the aussie dollar is strong against the green back. so I might think about making up a custom exhaust instead. hmm think has got me thinking now.

370rwkw I think may have been a bit of a over kill figure but at least have part that will handle that power and having it toned down will hopfully aid in the longevity of this set up.

Cheers again

Tristan

Another update from me.

I took my X Force system into a friends exhaust shop. We were thinking of making a custom system for the car, but... he had a look at the X force twin system, and said that although the collector is not perfect by any means, that it would do the job ok, especially as I wont have a cat, so my total backpressure will be fine. The one suggestion he had was to poke a mig down into the collector, and fill up the holes left by the crappy manufacture they did, then attack the join with a dremmel and clean it up a bit.

This guy has been making exhausts for race cars and fats road cars for a long time now, so I trust what he says. He also said that custom making a system for the Falcon would cost me more than $1550 NZ that I paid for the X force dump to tailpipe, and that is in mild steel.

So... I will give it a go - and report back on the results (though it may be a month or so before all done).

G and D - 4 inch dump pipe, 3.5 inch Metal cat, 3.5 inch mandrel bent cat back, high quality stainless end tip. I think they do this for about two and a half k, ...
