Too Much Oil

Hi Guys,

I did an oil change on my BF2 T on the weekend, but I think I may have put too much oil back in. Is there any adverse affects that this could cause.

I filled the oil filter before installing, and put 5L into the sump. I estimated there would be 5.5L in the car now. I ran the car on the starter for ~30 seconds (pulled fuel pump relay) to get the oil circulating. The dipstick barely registered anything after this. I chucked in another litre, taking it to the 6.5L capacity. I cranked it on the starter again and then left the car for 10 minutes for the oil to run down to the sump. The dipstick registered halfway up the OK mark. I put about another 500ML in and it took it to the Full mark. Took the car for a run and checked it at home and it was still at Full.

Checked it this morning after doing a 100km drive yesterday and it is now 4-5mm above the full mark on the dipstick!

How would that happen, and will it be OK?

Cheers,

Michael

the T takes 7.5L so you should be fine mate, if it's over full you will definately know about it, alot of smoke and a poorly performing engine is the result

Too much oil can cause overheating, excessive crankcase breathing and in a turbo car, turbo seal issues as the increased crank case pressure can cause oil drain issuses in the turbo. If its a genuine 5mm over the full mark i would drain some oil out.

cheers

Luke

My owners manual for my BF says 6.6 litres of oil to fill including new filter????

Dont know why your manual would say that. Should be 7.5 inc filter. Are you reading the correct info ?

Don't worry, overfilling the oil was Holden's solution to the piston slap issues they had with their Gen III's. If it overheats, blows smoke, burns oil and fowls things, ' it's all within spec.'

Thanks guys. It isnt blowing smoke and seems to be performing OK (a little slow, but normal - I think that's my right foot itching for more power! ).

I will keep an eye on it and if it stays high by the weekend, I may drain a little out.

Oh, and hanra, I tried that - it doesnt work in my car. Foot flat to the floor, it still starts...?!
