Check the condition of the wiring I suggested

so that means unclip it pull it back over to the intake side of the engine and if the outer sheith looks melted ( most B series are ) strip it back and physically check the condition of the cables ( two singles ) they can melt together and cause partial shorts causing issues like you have mentioned

went for a lovely drive this morning. I think I'm up for some half shafts as I found a small tear in the outer boot on drivers side (where I reckon noise is coming from).

Is that where it can sorta sit on the aircon pipework and melt?

Spend longer looking over the wiring and give it a gentle feel with your fingers ^

that's how I found a little bump where the ducting had melted a little and why I asked Jet to clarify if hes talking bout near some a/c pipework. Luckily the wires inside were okay.
