Yeah they are huge and a lot of them still use the older style pneumatic only brakes which even in double deckers which are only 180m long can take over 500m time to stop a train

We are closer to 2.7kms these days. Yes we still run pneumatic brakes but we run electric over pneumatic control systems. Not a smancy as electromagnetic retarder systems but we can do cool stuff these days like brake the portion of the train that can is travelling down hill while not effecting the portion of the train that still travelling up the hills, or brake from the rear wagons progressively through to the loco to stabilise the train etc etc

Keep that freighter stretched

You guys using ecp now?

All our silver sets still use electro pneumatic but the newer ones are almost entirely done via electric and with a little assistance of the pneumatics on board all controlled via a PWM signal to individual braking computers

Good luck haha

We have at least 10years left with aged rollingstock in nsw

Our new metro will be driverless which is scary for us but it's a totally desperate network which is nice

Possibly yes but a long road till it's viable

Plus you a whole new form of infrastructure required plus amount of freight carried by rail is huge

Does seem interesting though
