Scary thing is just about every road is like that at the moment, and quite a few highways too.

That intensity of rainfall usually only ever happens in the tropics...we aren't prepared for that in the southern half of the state.

This one is just down the road from my olds'...

And a few others from facebook...

No wonder that Telstra lost all their fiber optic links to the north for 24 hours. Apparently had to fly crews in by chopper to repair...amazing they got it all going again so quickly.

yeah its ridiculous at the moment Tab..

The worst part is knowing how governments operate.. None of this will start a program to rebuild it so it doesn't happen again. We'll check it all.. Make it safe.. Rebuild it to the previous standard.. Then the next cyclone will f*ck it all sideways again..

^this, reminds me of all the timber framed housing is the mid west of the USA. They get knocked down once a year by tornadoes....

LETS REBUILD WITH WOOD AGAIN!

Yet we have concrete slab houses in the northwest of WA that are 40+ years old and have survived more cyclones than most people can recall.....

Doesn't always work Snot.. Will use Precast culverts and spanning slabs.. but not piers or base slabs.. Not a huge fan of precast decking either but it does save alot of time..

Same deal in bushfire-prone areas Ralphy...lets just rebuild our house with wooden decks & cladding in amongst the trees and expect a different outcome.

What's it like getting pipes & precast stuff at the moment in any case Panda? Got a rello that works for Hume who was telling me before xmas that they have a massive waiting list due to mining & curtis island etc. and because that's where the money is that's their first priority.

Going to be some fun times ahead.

At the moment we aren't having too much of an issue.. Basically we take our order list to Humes first.. And if they say they're busy.. We say seeya later then we're going to Rocla.. They clear their schedule pretty fast.. But it really also depends what you want.. Custom precast stuff can take a bit.. But the usual stuff from their catalogues isn't too bad.. Humes have started optimising their production.. So say the Rockhampton yard now produces reinforced pipes, but the pits come out of mackay etc..

But given all the recent damage I can safely say that all bets are off and Humes and Rocla can probably price things however high they want.. If we cast concrete in-situ we guarantee the road can't open for 28 days at least.. So pre-cast will be the way of things..

Pretty sure Humes have dedicated one or two plants solely to the Curtis island LNG stuff.. So we still have plenty of options for where to get our stuff from.. Which to be fair doesn't really worry us all that much because when you need it out west you're paying a fortune for transport anyway.. Who cares if they charge a bit more because it comes from slightly further away.
