well the doctor said I got GOUT, but I am only 19yrs old so I think he is bullsh*tting

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Sounds serious

An inherited disorder of uric-acid metabolism occurring predominantly in men, characterized by painful inflammation of the joints, especially of the feet and hands, and arthritic attacks resulting from elevated levels of uric acid in the blood and the deposition of urate crystals around the joints. The condition can become chronic and result in deformity.

You're right, too young, this would be just for old guys like me.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I agree I told the doctor that, but I am still getting it done just in case they do find something wrong with me :gooff:

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Unfortunately I can sympathise with you one this one – I have had it since I was sixteen.

What sh*ts me the most is the common misconception that it is caused by excess consumption of alcohol (no offence intended Annie, I understand you don't have a clue). It is actually something that is passed down through the genes, in fact it usually will only affect every second generation.

I hope for your sake it’s not though Wicksy and the doctor has misdiagnosed – otherwise kiss goodbye to beer, anything with seeds in it (I.e. tomatoes and strawberries) and acidic foods like pineapple. Welcome to sleepless nights, 5+ litres of water everyday, medication daily, endless blood tests and plenty of sh*t slinging from the ill-informed!

All the best though in any case.

Trent.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

is it not only the rich that get it

Geez, that's not good. I didn't realise it was genetic? Isn't stuff like shellfish (crabs, lobster etc) also a big nono? Dad had it pretty bad for about a week. Was in absolute agony, couldn't even walk! :gooff:

Yeah Lumpster – she’s not pretty. I think shellfish is one of the baddies – but that doesn’t really bother me that much as I was never a great fan of it to begin with.

In a nutshell it’s the inability of the body to be able to get rid of uric acid as Flukeyluke touched on – kind of like a diabetic not being able to control insulin levels. It comes from purines (or something, not sure on spelling) which are present in just about everything you eat, some foods have a higher concentration of course.

For lack of better terminology essentially if you can’t “piss it out” fast enough or effectively control it with medication then it will pick a random joint in your body a calcify – causing the arthritic like pains.

Similar too, or along the lines of what is commonly known as 'Water Retention'?

Di-Uretics are used to control this aren't they?

I've got Tonsilitis.  :k24t:  :stupid:

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Any chance this will affect your ability to talk?

:k24t: ... let's hope so.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

As a matter of fact Ken....NO! :ermm:

Doesn't affect my ability to post either, in fact gives me more time to devote to posting because the quack gave me the day off. :w00t2:

I'm actually feeling much better today, the Penicillan must be doing the trick, clearing up that nasty rash too...... :ermm:

My old man had Gout, I hope I don't get it.
