yeh pretty keen on the money but excited for it cos ill be saving for europe. who wouldnt be excited for that? haha. I guess itd be harder with a misses.

nice, where abouts u looking?

Do yaself a favour, I know theres talk of a big annual amount working in mines, but as a qualified tradie just work out what you would be paid here working the same hours as they do in the mines. Then factor in the conditions and sacrifices. Is it worth it?

I did the same thing and worked out it wasnt.

All sounds good, wow $120k per year, yer but your doing nearly 2 years work.

In melbourne I'm guessing you guys are on ok rates for tradies. I know of chippies doing construction for contractors on big $$$. But the rosters are long (ask QIK1) and the conditions are'nt that flash.

The highest paying place for chippies I've heard of has the nickname alcatraz. Grog is rationed to 4 cans a day, no fullstrength beers either. sign in and out of everywhere, no walking off the paths or you'll get a window seat. Pay is good $3k a week after tax, 4 weeks of work, 1 week off. 80+ hour weeks. your life = wake up, eat, work, shower, 4 beers, eat, sleep.

the mine I was on in WA was a bit more relaxed - as many beers or udl's as you want as long as you're 0.000 by 6am. The pay wasn't as good as alcatraz or the pilbarra, but I make $40k gross in 3 months. Comms were very restricted, stuff all phone reception and telstra only. restricted wifi too - no TAB or pronz or even gold lotto sites were allowed. I got to see my girlfriend about 5 days every 5 weeks.

In short, good $$$ but no life. As you are a chippie then expect poor conditions on top of that.

My brother in law was gonna jump on the WA bandwagon as a driller.. Would've paid another 60k a year compared to what he's on.. But he's doing 9 on, 9 off in QLD and works 2 hours from home.. Over there it was gonna be 21on, 7 off.. Basically the same dollars per hour.. And he'd have to pay for flights back every 7 days.

won't let me edit again

this is why I no longer work over in the mines, however I still spend that much time on minesites I might as well. but I love being home for weekends.

Oh and if you're single then the ratio of chicks to dixx is about 1:50 on construction sites.

Most places are getting a bit more desperate and they'll pay some or all the flights now. I had to pay cairns to perth but the mob I worked for payed perth to the mines. A lot of places pay for flights to nearest capital now so I'd only have to pay brissie - cairns

Nothing better then watching the vultures hover around the new chicks on construction sites.
