Christ, that's a lot of money for a giant battery. Why have I not heard about a power wall before. Even the other day I learned jail is spelled gaol here in Australia. Plus solar on top of that and a few thousand to install. So all up 20k as a minimum, If the batteries are like the car ones, I'll get 10 years out of it. Seems expensive compared to the money I'll actually save, which looks to be zero with those numbers. I'll stick to peasant life and run a extension cable from the neighbors outside socket

Saying that we are only considering it because we’re going to be there long term.

I can't even remember the last blackout. It's been years

Just us! Was a fault where the supply connected to the house. Everyone laughed at me cos I was from Adelaide and just assumed blackouts were normal. All you guys got me thinking about solar so started crunching the numbers. A number of things unfortunately mean it probably doesn't stack up for us:-ACT power prices are very low. Actually looks like undiscounted rates are about half those of Adelaide which is one of the most expensive (makes sense you guys want solar and battery so bad)-Our feed in tariffs are virtually zero-Since most of our power use us at night, if the feed in is rubbish we would have to go battery too.-Pay back period for a solar and battery setup for our size house here is an average of 15 years. That's for a house on full electricity and reverse cycle heating and cooling. We have ducted evaporative cooling (which uses negligible water and power) and ducted gas heating which while quite efficient, would be the biggest contributor to our power costs given our winter climate. So I'd need to factor in switching to ducted reverse cycle too.I actually much prefer the fresher air feeling of gas heating and evaporated cooling. At the moment I think solar with battery doesn't work for us but I can imagine reconsidering when the gas heating dies one day.
