Oh yeah don't get me wrong, I'm all for days off. But think Anzac Day should be more about Anzacs rather than an extra day off work.

Yeah I agree completely..

I do admit that small retailers really get stung by public holidays.. So they do need to keep them in check..

Going back a while I would have loved it if the government scrapped stupid penalty rates for hospitality on weekends.. Big believer that you get a job that keeps odd hours or works weekends.. That's just an expectation of that job.. As a baker we used to get 20% loading for any hours worked between 6pm and 6am (which was most of them). In hindsight that's just bloody ridiculous because I was a freaking baker. It's not a 8-5 mon-fri job..

My thoughts and just that my thoughts.

Is that ANZAC day should be a long weekend.

Here's why.

Soldiers don't do what they do to be remembered. Most of the time those that find themselves in conflict long stop fighting for why they are there and fight for their mates along side of them.

Those that made the ultimate sacrifice and those that returned not the same as they deployed. Would like to think it was for something, ie our freedoms and way of life.

So by all means go to a service or find some solitude and take time to pause and reflect on just what these Hero's did to give you your freedoms. Then go and have time with the family on the long weekend and enjoy those said freedoms. To me that is the greatest way show respect.

I hear the argument about businesses suffering. But whilst we still have mandated public holidays for religious (namely Christian) reason or horse races. Then that argument doesn't wash with me.

Kimbo has it ABSOLUTELY correct. Bugger a few people who think it'll save them a buck by not having a public holiday... enjoy your freedom instead!

As it's a date specific public holiday, then it should be the closest working weekday - e.g. Mon-Fri can stay and Sat/Sun should be Monday.
