I have just sold my 2002 model Vx S pack 5 speed manual and in the market for a 6 speed manual XR6T. My s pack was a beautiful car but despite being manual it wasn't fast enough to keep me happy and also being a fussy owner the car had all the problems with the M35 manual gearbox such as clunking into gear, the clutch slipping after about 20-30 minutes of driving once it was hot, shaddering of the clutch when I turned of the ignition etc... Which weren't a big issue but annoyed the hell out of me.

I wasn't going to buy another aussie car with a manual gearbox again because I heard the fords manual gearboxes weren't a smooth one aswell but I cant go past the joy of driving a manual. Can the owners of these cars clarify the kinds of problems they may have had with there cars or gearboxes and things that annoy them before I spend a small fortune :) cheers guys.....

I have a BA mk11 with a 6 speed. Changing the trans fuild to Tranzmax (yep auto trans fuild) makes the shifts heaps better. Many have said changing the shifter will make the shifts better again. The stock clutch is crap and won't handle much more than stock power. I am about to change my clutch to a mal wood option 3 and through one of Mal's short throw shifters in which again many people have done and have been very impressed with the results. Search a few of the threads in the Mal Wood section and you will learn lots.

I'll got a BA mk11 with the six speed. and mine clunks, proabley similiar to your old car. But its not the box. the biggest culprit is the cv's I've been told.

Man I have a bf mk1 and I think my gearbox is great. They are a little bit notchy but that's because they are strong and tight. It might bother some people but you get used to it and is the best ive driven. The clutches are crap even with stock power. As for the clunks all of my friends have complained about them but I think it just rests on how you drive.

What to look out for???.........well the crappy gearbox is a good place to start. But if you have to have a manual (and I did) then you should probably ignore that. Haven't tried that transmax Z though and people seem to swear by that
