How Do I Know If My "premium Sound Is Rooted"?

Hi All,

Just spent well over 2 hours searching threads and various upgrades that people have had. I also read about people having their sub changed upto 3 times, replacing standard components (speakers/subs) with better ones etc.

My question is this. Is the "premium sound" on my new RRP $70K (almost) car THAT CRAP??? It sounds farkin terrible IMO. Sh1ts itself on radio at 14.. CD on 12 -16 and it's popping, the sub pops..

Dodgy amp perhaps? Head unit stuffed or Cheap Ford..? Any audiofiles please tell..

If it's useless (as I suspect) then I want to keep it looking stock, but want a MUCH better sound. So I have read up (heaps of great threads guys) on getting a new head unit, using VDO/Alpine/Other units to convert the in line sound to a better quality sound output etc. However, the easiest, best, cheapest solution is say a JVC DVD headunit for $500 and replace subs/amp/speakers, say further $1600 but then it's an ugly looking setup...

Can I get stock look/Kick arse sound without the hiss/crackle etc?

Any and all help is appreciated.

I am no expert, but my premium sound is really good. Radio and CD as loud as you can bare. If playing the IPOD into the system through the aftermarket IPOD amp - you need to have the IPOD at about 2/3rds volume or it can distort through the amp. Otherwise all good. SO.... I think you need yours looked at.

With my MP3 player on 90% volume, I can crank up the stock system to 26-28 (depending on song) with no distortion. This is while listening to Pantera though. Other bands like Metallica or Megadeth I can only hit 18-20 volume before the sub starts doing it's popping thing. My bass level is roughly 90%, trebble 85%, fader is equal front/rear, equal balance as well and loud option enabled.

These volumes are quite fine for me though. Even though my hearing is 100%, I'd swear that working around military jets for years would have had more of an impact.

I wasnt clear - my IPOD goes through an aftermarket connection which is amplified - I think more than the Ford one - so can be too loud from the source causing distortion rather than the volume of the speakers distorting. This was supplied by one of our members here - doesnt do them anymore.

With this wee box my IPOD is as clear and loud as CDs, and I can play video through the screen, as well as being able to switch to reverse camera on car or trailer (using a Dick Smith Switch box).

I have listened to a few of them and they all have been the same as mine. Vol 18 or so is the highest they will pump without distortion with the bass up 90%.

I don't need it any louder than it is, but it is no where near as good as a quality system could be.

Yes ive had mine replaced three times. The one I have now is GOLD!!!! Use my Aux all the time base full loud on and crank it to 34 and no dramas what so ever.

The old subs popped and carried along but now with the one that's in it now is sweet.

Guys - without writing a white paper or anything like that on this, here are a few points.

* If you like your music loud and still crisp and clean then - PI55 OFF the Ford/Panasonic Sub, and speakers - while they are ok for a stock setup, not really something that will cope all that well being pushed. The bandwidth and Freq ability of this gear is rather limited, as is the power handling.

* The stock amp (where fitted ie. in the F6) is a Sanyo. Funny enough reasonable quality - Jap built and all round not too bad THD levels for the volume and size. But again worth an upgrade if you planning on driving your system hard, fast and want it to be clean sound!

* The weakest part I have found so far (as many others seem to have also) is the Sub... First thing to go is the sub. The OEM amp will/should handle a reasonable Pioneer/Sony/Clarion or something in a 8" or 10" at easy volume levels around the 4 ohms which out a need for any additional Amps.

* Front and rear speakers - while the fronts are a 'make shift' split system (tweeter in the windscreen pillar) and the rears a 2way 6x9 (from memory) they lack in clarity and separation. Will sound ok and reasonable volume levels if bass and treble levels are tweaked to the way you like, however will never sound as good as even a 30$ pair of head phones from dick smith... if you head into any good car audio installer such as Ryda or Lifestyle audio in Sydney, or even a JB Hifi they will be able to hook you up with something again like Pioneer/Sony/Clarion which will run off the OEM Amp. This should prove to be a huge advantage for around the 500$ mark. (personally not a fan of Sony...)

So - great setup on the cheap.... Keep everything and just upgrade the Sub, and speakers which should cost all up around the $600-800 mark.

If you want to get serious then look at doing something with an AV box, Sub amp 2x CH, and speaker amp 4x ch, serious speakers, dual voice coil sub etc - so serious gear like JL Audio, Boston, Soundstream, etc will set u back upwards of $2500+++

While still keeping it look 100% std spec.... If you start to get into serious gear you will most likely upgrade your cabling also...

As for pre amps (inline between your ipod and the ICC unit AUX input)... Prob not a good idea - really was not designed to have a high current input (pending on the level of output from your in line amp)...

As a rule - typically anyone in the audio know will tell u anything over about 50% of total volume level is just going to produce a lot of distortion. Not what u want to hear and not what your speakers and sub want to be fed - this is typically the main cause of blown speakers (voice coils).

Make sure your recordings (MP3's) are distortion free also - most downloaded tunes from free or P2P share locations will contain distortion and not good for your gear - stock or especially upgraded... Best way to make sure of this not being the case - buy the CD and rip it onto your player urself!!!

Or if u ever won tatslotto have a look at some McIntosh and Dynaudio gear- ull buy once and have it for a life time if u look after it!

Hope this helps...

PM me if you want any details on this sort of thing!

:)
