Fuel Economy When Engine Is New

Bought a new MkII auto T a few weeks back. Car has 900km on it now. Fuel economy is worse than I was expecting so far. Was giving it some stick early but have since resetting the average fuel economy meter I have been driving it conservatively since. I am driving predominantly in Sydney traffic with some freeway and off-peak driving. It is currently averaging in the low 17s L / 100km. I try to keep off the accelerator pedal and cruise as much as possible, seems like I only need to breathe on it for the car to go. I keep the shifter in normal mode almost always. I optioned the car with the 17s and have a full size spare. Driving alone mostly. Used a mix of 95 and 98 premium fuel from BP and Mobil.

Can I expect the fuel economy to improve as the engine gets more km? I appreciate the car will do well on the open freeway but the XR8 Sprint manual I have just retired from daily driver duty was doing better than this.

How accurate is the indicator in the ICC? I notice that if I put the car in neutral/park while idling that the car will drop .2 L/hr. I thought the ZF gearboxes already put the car in neutral in such circumstances.

Apart from that the car is great. Performance is phenomenal, handling is great, ride is much improved over the Sprint. Auto is a boon when stuck in Sydney traffic, which is often. Can't wait to do a road trip to Canberra or Melbourne.

17L sounds a bit high especially when your not flogging it. I was advised on here to drive it semi-hard from day one and ive still never seen 17L per 100. Even on one of our more enthusiastic late night cruises or runs around Bathurst ive never seen 17L. I average from day 1 11.9. Mostly city driving and running a 10 psi tune. Stick with the 98 stuff as well always helps.

and dont forget to post some pics.

17 seems very high. My ute average is 14L. And I do drive my ute hard. Highway driving I sit on 8.5 - 9.5L/100km

Get a custom tune mate, and only run 98 Octane. The car will perform and run a 100% better!

Fuel economy will definitely improve as the engine runs in.

But don't run it in like nanna, and avoid long periods of idling or slow traffic with continous low engine speeds (if possible).

Take it on some long hard hill drives, and get the oil pumping, shift down at speed, vary engine speed- your engine will thank you for it.

Ignore fuel economy for the first few thou km while your engine beds in.

I ran both of mine in hard and drove it at different speeds using the gears - now I get 7.5L/100km cruising and even with mixed hard driving/mountains/hwy/traffic I average 11.5.
