Hi All

Having a bit of a problem with pinging on my 06 BF2 XR6T.

I got a C&V generic tune a while back, and only other mod is F6 CAI. It was running fine on the 8psi tune for some time, and then started pinging under full throttle acceleration between 3500 and 5500rpm. It is very brief and far from violent (just sounds like a little "tink" and then goes away) but is reproducible in most situations. I don't believe it is related to the tune as I checked the tune on a dyno and AFRs were safe, and it still happens on the factory tune as well.

I always run PULP (95 ron) but have tried a few tanks of Ultimate and it makes no difference whatsoever. I have asked Ford to look at it and they came back with the helpful conclusion 'try filling up on PULP instead of ULP' after I had already informed them I always run PULP minimum.

So where can I start looking? This weekend I was going to change the plugs, gap them to 0.8mm (gap is not the cause - happens on the factory tune), change the fuel filter, and install the lower temp thermostat that C&V provided.

Mate I will say this as bluntly as I can, Ford should have fixed it but they wont, you can fark around all you like. Spend some money and get a custom tune, problem solved and more power.

That won't solve the problem if there is something else wrong though will it I.e. gunky fuel filter, fouled plugs etc?

A custom tune is a $3000 proposition for me - getting the car to a tuner (I'm in Darwin) and then paying for the tune and return trip.

Yeah they are a bit of a shocker - that's why I didn't buy the car here. Trying to rip me off blind on a used one and they left me with "mate we could sell that car any day of the week..". Was still on the lot months later. I ended up paying thousands of dollars less for a demo BF2 from Melbourne instead of a used BF in Darwin.

I know there is a CAPA accredited tuner up here, but I really would not like to play russian roulette with the car - I'd take it to C&V or Nizpro.

Both excellent choices for preferred tuners, but like I said, I dont think your options are as bleak as you think they are, but without any formal knowledge I will wait for the NT boys to reply, even if it is to take out on one of there beer swilling gay orgies they call cruises.

the car should not ping with the standard tune in place on 95 octane, you need the ford dealer to fix this problem before venturing any further with tuning, as you may have a mechanical problem which tuning may not get around.

If your content with your tune and you afr's are ok... try changing in this order plugs, fuel filter, check you coils , it might be a lazy fuel pump as well, but that will show a bad AF reading ... If all else fails call the boys at C&V and and they will guide you in the right direction.

Plugs, fuel filter and thermostat are happening next weekend :) If no good then I'll take it back to Ford to see if they can test the coil packs and fuel pressure

Funnily enough I just remembered I used to have a similar problem with my BA Futura doing the same thing. It would feel like it had heaps of timing in it and go like a rocket and then pinging, and settle down after that. It had not been modified in any way - maybe its the weather up here :roflmbo:
