Clot watch: now films blamed

July 11 2003

Sitting through long movies can cause blood clots in the same way as deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) can develop in passengers on long aircraft flights, New Zealand medical researchers said today.

They dubbed the condition "seated immobility thromboembolism" (SIT) syndrome in an article in the latest issue of the New Zealand Medical Journal.

The researchers reported the case of Phyllis Caton, 53, of Raumati, north of Wellington, who developed sudden severe pain in her right leg within 30 minutes of leaving a cramped theatre, where she had watched the three-hour "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers", the second film in the box-office hit trilogy filmed in New Zealand.

When her leg began to swell the next day, a clot was diagnosed and she was treated with blood-thinning drugs for six months.

Professor Richard Beasley of the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand said that the patient's habit of sitting at a computer for two to three hours at a time had probably increased her risk of developing a clot.

He said that although the prospect of developing DVT on aircraft had been well-publicised, it was not generally recognised that people who sat for long periods in other circumstances were also endangered.

"There are many situations where you can put yourself at risk, and this is often not recognised by the medical profession," he told Radio New Zealand, urging doctors to consider the prospect of SIT syndrome when patients had symptoms similar to DVT.

Beasley said that clots often progressed up the body after people began moving following long periods seated and could reach the lungs, bringing on pleurisy or breathlessness.

He advised people sitting for a long time, regardless of the situation, to undertake frequent foot exercises while seated, not to cross their legs and where possible to stand up and walk around regularly.

Now let's not dismis any suggestions out of hand here ... let's evaluate this based on it's merit ...

hhhhmmmm, The Ken Boyle Room ... yes, yes I like that, like it a lot, has a certain RING to it, don't you think?

Maybe a poll is needed to decide the issue? All votes should be cast into the fires of Mount Doom.

I can see it now, all the moderators would have to be hobbits (not sure that they're not already, eh Froddo?) and the entire focus could be on my ring ...
