I have a '06 BF XR6T with the ZF auto and have noticed my engine pings when im using normal unleaded. I know I should be using some sort of Premium but to save a few bucks here and there I have been mixing it up with a bit of unleaded, premium and e10 unleaded. The owners manual just says you will not get maximum performance using regular unleaded but I would not expect a factory tune to ping. The only mods are F6 snorkle, K&N panel filter and cat back exhaust. Does the ecu detect a lesser octane fuel and adjust the timing? The car has travelled nearly 40,000kms and hasnt yet had its fuel filter replaced where I have read they seem to absorb some fuel tank plastic offs from the moulds from factory. Maybe my filter is getting clogged?

Mate ive heard a lot of them ping. You might be able to get away with E10 as some brands have a slightly higher RON than reg unleaded.

IN short. Dont bother with regular use 95 or above

Mate add up what you really save by buying a full tank of 91 over a full tank of 98 at 11 cents by say 62 litres = $6.82, buy ya milk somewhwere else or dont get that chocky bar, not to mention the added milage and piece of mind.

My question is, why buy a performance car then strangle it with a low spec fuel. :original: maybe you should have bought an NA

It was just a simple question, is it normal for a standard xr6T to ping using regular unleaded. 90% of my driving is on the freeway at 110km/h so I do not need maximum performance of premium unleaded as stated in the owners manual. Just for interest sake, recently I drove from Sydney to Albury with a full tank of premium unleaded and returned 11.2L/100km @ 110 km/h cruise control the whole way. On the return trip I used e10 and returned 10.8L/100km @ 110km/h. Not a huge difference but I always thought I got more from premium but maybe it was just a mental thing?

Its also a good question considering I had to visit 5 petrol stations tonight to find one that actually had some premium left. Sometimes its going to be necessary to put some 91 ron fuel in when their are shortages in supply.

PS I live in a built up area to.

when I got mine from the dealers they had normal unleaded in it and it pinged, I run 95 premium as my work fuel card is for caltex and in adelaide caltex doesnt have 98 and I get no pinging at all, it has more go and I recon it is more economical as well.

I wonder weather changing the cat back exhaust would reduce back presure and cause higher boost, this may be y it is much more noticable with normal unleaded?

cheers

when you open the petrol flap it says on the little sticker on the inside PREMIUM UNLEADED. these cars are ment to run on 95 ron minimum.if you arent prepared to put the good stuff in then you may as well trade the t in for a mazda 3.

It even says in the owners manual that it must run on minimum of 95 RON. So would would assume that Ford designed it to run on a MINIMUM of 95 RON.....
