Latest news in August edition of Motor Mag is that performace Fords will get a six speed auto in early 2004 that can handle 630NM of Torque. The auto is lighter and smaller. Claimed 10% improvement to accleration.

Will be available in GT model. Not sure if the XR6T will get it, but if Ford want to increase boost and produce a 300KW Turbo with auto transmission this auto will enable then to do so. I think the writing is on the wall.

Motor mag also claim that Ford is evaluating a high pwered XR6T. Apparently the Ford entered a protype hotted up XR6T in the Targa Tasmania race.

I think the writing is on the wall for a hotter XR6T B) .

What does this mean for the XR8?

Either the V8 gets even more power, or they develop a limited edition turbo for the GT range. My money is on the second option.

I reacon 6 speeds is a waste in a manual, let alone an automatic. There are hardly any roads you need them for which the 4th or 5th gear couldn't adequately handle.

On a positive note, the new slush box is lighter which is just what the BA needs at the moment.

I think you'll find that a well built 6-speed (auto or manual) will have the same top and first gears as a 5-speed manual or 4-speed auto just the gears will be closer stacked....

and yes that is a stab at the 6-speed in the holden, that 6th is just ridulous!!!

Dave.

6 speeds,

just dig in around "Motor mag" a bit more & you'll see the article on the new Jag (one of Fords little off shoot companies) featuring the new ZF six speed auto. This will enable lower diff ratios & sixth gear to be used often.

Ford appear to be indicating a 6 speed auto for the LTD 220 ...

the bit about the extra 2-3psi causing heat problems is abit funny .... going from 6psi to 16psi .. yeah sure then there is a heat problem ... but 6 to 9 ... oh well .. the "fear factor" again ...

personally I like a single rail 5 speed manual ... with 4th straight thru , a 4 speed auto is plenty for me too ... it is a muscle car remember ... :D

With so much torque already, is a 6 speed box good???

If you assume 1st gear is the same, or higher ratio, and 6th is the same, or slightly lower than 4th (Auto), or 5th (Manual) now, is 6 gears going to improve acceleration? I mean 1st gear in the Auto ends so damn quick I couldn't imagine how quick it ends now in the 5 speed manual let alone a 6 speed box.

And what if you increase torque further, put in a stronger gearbox, wouldn't less gears be better????

well mal,

if you compare it to a crummydore, they're flat out getting 65 k's outta 1st. Where as we're going over 80. So if we've got a lower 1st gear & lower diff ratio we'll be in max torque band much quicker & that's where it all happens on the street. Plus we'll be able to cruise 120-130 kph & stay below 2000rpm which will really add to the cars appeal, to me anyhow.
