I always thought it was either laser beam which works as you described, or doppler effect used by radar.Sorry not the best selection of words. Didn't think anyone would look at it that closely. It does use a laser beam at a slight angle across the road and registers the speed of any car that passes by (the system makes a mathematical adjustment to account for the angle of view). If you've driven past one with a radar detector you'd see what I mean. That's what I'm led to beleive.

Ive noticed that most fixed speed cameras now have a CCTV camera aimed at them close by as they are often at risk of spray cans by passing truckies. They can get speeders both ways on a single lane road or only one direction on a 2or 3 lane road. They all have to be marked with stickers and lightbar, there also needs to be a very bored cop manning the unit at all times. You can now get ones that are fitted under the bonnet and is 100% undetectable from the cops.Just a thought. I love my radar. Its never failed me yet. DorkoW.A is the only state you can legally use them.In NSW if you are caught with one, even if it is in a bag in the boot, you cop 9 points and $1500 fine. They also have detector detectors that can detect older RD units. the newer ones are undetectable even from the new Stalcar 3 RDD.
