In my opinion not enough thought has gone into this idea. In principle it is heading in the right direction but unfortunately the concept has been thought up by do gooders and academics with no idea of the real world.

Not all kids are hoons behind the wheel they infact use their cars to go about their daily lives to either educate themselves or earn a dollar. As we all know cars are getting more expensive to run many of these kids car pool as us adults do. To either go to work or Uni why did'nt they bring in restricted times and days. eg. 6am-7pm mon-fri upto 4 people to allow for car pooling. Between the hrs of 7pm-6am bring in the new rules, I have no issue with that at all. And would'nt be any harder to police than the new law.

All your going to see is more cars on the road and this could result in more accidents.

The only way to reduce accidents is to educate the young drivers, reduce traffic numbers and improve our roads

Why does Government take the easy option (lets put more restrictions on the population that'll teach em)?

Picture this 5 young people in a car going out for a cruise, they may/probably do stupid things...

Now the same 5 people but with the new rules...

If they can only have 1 other person in the car that means that the same 5 people in 1 car now turns into 5 people in 3 cars.. Now if me and my mates are in our own cars goin out, that's just askin for a street race..

My point is, they are gonna do stupid things no matter what, but instead of one car hitting something there might just end up being more involved...

The idea is bullsh*t. Whos to say that everyone that's a passenger in your car isnt over 21? Passengers dont need to carry ID with them everytime they hop in a car with someone, how can they police this? Are they going to make a law that all passengers between 16 and 21 must carry ID when travelling from A to B? I think Zap is on the money, 11pm till 5am should be restricted times, that's when the mayhem starts, (*COUGH* PRINCES HWY *COUGH*) and exemptions can be granted for people who are working early mornings and so on. However I think this should be carried out though their ENTIRE probationary period. I would understand (but still wouldnt agree) on this proposed law if it remained though the entire probationary period but the fact that its only a years restriction makes me think they havent thought this through.

I think it is a good idea but restirct it to say midnight to 5am.

I think we had a few 4-5 person fatalities when only 1 car was involved last year and we all know what young guys drive like with a few mates in the car.

They need to introduce mandatory driver education classes and maybe even bring it into the schools (Year 10 & on) and show videos of people AFTER the accidents they survive. Kind of like shock tactics.

I heard that it worked for some poeple when that BODY PARTS museum thing came round.

Once the smokers saw what it did to people lungs, by seeing actual lungs of a dead person, some of them quit right there and then.

In the end the government will do as they please and we will all have to adhere to the rules.

Cheers

James

I'm All for restrictions during certain times (eg midnight - 5am) , But not for all hours of the day. About 20-30,000+ Teens will get their P's this year nationwide, Can you imagine all of the cars on the road is this rule was put in place?

And I agree, They need to educate young drivers (Such as myself), And put them in Defensive driving courses, etc. I Am for a fact taking some defencive driving courses like the one that was advertised on the forums once I get my P's, $400 is a good price to pay to know how to keep your car under control in an controled environment.

The body part Museum was great, I went there for TAFE, Extremely interesting to see all of the exhibits, and they did have things like Smokers Brains, Compared to non smokers, Also their lungs. It was astounding to see the difference between them.

I also think that it is too easy to get your P's at the present time in VIC (Not sure about other states), a 20 minute drive with an instructor is all you need to pass, Along with the Computerised Hazards test. I would like to see how the government will enforce the 120 hours of driving standard for learners. Ive known people who have drove under 3 hours in a car in the 2 years they had their Learners permit, and still get their P's first time. Its simpally stupid.

It states here that

From 1 July 2008, the new P1 licences will be issued and everyone applying for a probationary licence will need to pass the same tests. (Drivers with a probationary licence issued before 1 July 2008 will be licensed under the old system.)

Then it states that the passenger restrictions will be for P1 licences holders, So I guess if you get your P's before 1st of July, The Restrictions dont apply to you.

It a rule which only punishes the good.

Let's face it, if you wanted to get loads of people into your car even as a P plater you would. You would simply remove the P plates. The people this rule is trying to stop are the people who get four of their best mates and then wrap the car around a pole. The problem is that these sorts of people don't really pay attention to laws. How many times have we heard of cases where people where killed ridding in the boot? already very illegal yet people still do it. (Hey I did it when I was in my younger more stupid days)

Yes driving is a privileged not a right, so lets make the punishment for breaking the road rules far more heftier, eg fewer point, life time disqualifications, even jail for those who don't get the message. (hey we'd do it for unlicensed gun owners). Coupled with a far heavier visible police presences. There is nothing in the world which will make traffic slow down that a visible police car. (Undercover cars don't work as there are so few of them about).

I know there are a few people here who may disagree with this (eg Those with heavy right feet)...

The other thing they should be doing is building more race tracks for the public and make it easy to get onto. (Eg have a stretches of road which is unlimited in speed for this purpose) so that people have a place to have fun.

Just my 2.2c

I think the idea is ok, but it should only be from 11pm until 5am, as this is the main time car loads of under 25's are getting killed.

It is also a knee jerk reaction, which it typical of any government.

by doin this they are discouraging those that actually do undertake a designated driver role on a nite out, regardless of whether there is one passenger or five, if the driver is an idiot he/she will still behave like one regardless of how many morons are in his/her car.

these new rules will put more cars on the road, causing more environmental harm... I thought reducing carbon emissions was one of the reasons behind car pooling?

I can see it now, more emissions, more traffic, traffic jams etc. I am thankful I live in the country

why do all the 'stupid' people get to make the decisions for our country? :tonguepoke:
