I have been looking to buy a house after selling up last year and renting.

We have found a great house, but it has 330,000volt powerlines crossing the very edge of the back yard.

My family all say that they cause cancer and every other ailment. Today a report was released saying that it would be VERY UNLIKELY to cause cancer.

I am thinking of putting up a faraday mesh in the ceiling to reduce the EMF as a precaution.

I am after people views and experiences with high voltage power lines and living under them.

hmmm, very hotly debated topic there ZAP, as you said there are many studies, including the one this morning, that deny there is a major threat to people living under the power lines.

I think the mobile towers are a bit more likely to have an effect on life.

The mesh would be a good "safer than sorry" measure IMO.

I think if it plays on your mind alot, then maybe you would regret the decision, also if the family gives you grief about it, you may be in for a headache!

also think about re-sale, the majority of people would'nt want a bar of it, hence its cheaper price.

study or no study, its the publics general concensus that will dictate resale price.

IF they came down, I doubt it would be anywhere near the house. there is a 50m wide easement under the lines that would cop any fallen lines.

My office is about 50m from the same lines and I do hear them buzzing when it is raining, so I know the noise they can make.

And just to clarify, these lines are the ones on the HUGE steel towers about 60m up in the air. It is not some pole in the backyard.

They are one of the primary feeds into Sydney from the Hunter Valley power stations.

The House is priced about $150,000 under the normal prices for the area. I figure that I would rather buy under powerlines than on a main road, as the polution is far worse than EMF.

P.S does anyone know how you can measure EMF ?

we bought a place with pwer running across the back of it , not sure on the voltage there not the big suckers but seem to be a little different to the normal street lines you see , I have heard the big power lines sizzle in the rain we have them goin near work ,don't think I would like to live under those, but part of the reason we bought our house was because of the power lines it has a 10 meter easement from the fence wich ment it has a huge back yard

Power line kill values.

It may be cheap to buy now, buy when it comes time to sell the property won't have appreciated as much as one without the lines.

A good rule of thumb when buying a property, if you have any doubts or worries, don't do it. Something else will come along. If you're not in a position where you have to move in a hurry, then take your time. When you see what you want you'll just know its right.

If I remember right the strength of a fields is measured in Tesla's, cant remember much more then that though...

Have a walk around the backyard with a compass... it should give you an idea of the strength of the field compared to the natural magnetic field of earth (judging by how much the needle fluctuates)

magnetic fields aren't really my thing but from what I can remember this should work...

If the needle doesn't move much then it wont be that much stronger then earths or if it moves heaps then you know it is.

this wont really give you much other then piece of mind because there is'nt any evidence that states what effect a certain strength field has on a person.

maybe there is a more scientific person on here that can shed abit of light on the topic....
