Donating Members 703 Member For: 20y 5m 11d Gender: Male Location: Melbourne Posted 01/02/08 03:41 AM Author Share Posted 01/02/08 03:41 AM (edited) Ok thanks for the info guys.Im a bit hesitant to reinstall windows at the moment as that means ill have to reinstall and update everything and im already at my download limit for this month.I did update windows but didnt install this:Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 (KB929300)Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806)Can anybody tell me wtf it is and does??Also ive deleted all the programs I dont need and freed up a lot of space. I do think there is a lot of programs starting on startup because it takes a while to boot up.Anybody got a link to a startup logger?? I googled 'Hijack this' as PURVIE suggested but cant find it. Mate id like to know whats initally starting when you boot up windows. There is a program called HiJack This, download it, its free and small, if you can, run a dump and post it here. This will tell us what is running in the background and can also show many items that the Task Manager cannot. From what it sounds like, it could be spyware related or perhaps your PC just needs to be optimised and flushing temporary files may be a go.it sounds like hes had it for a while so I still reckon a format would be a good idea, judging by the nvidia 6600 its at least 2-3 yrs old..HiJackThis is a great tool though and has saved me a few times from formatting.. In a nutshell, its just library of pre-coded solutions to common program requirements (other programs on your computer rely on the .net framework in order to work). Most of the newer software applications built for windows require .NET Framework, so unless you want your computer to run like a three leg dog download and install the .NET Frameworks. You could probably get away with just installing the .Net Framework 2.0 version, but it wouldn't hurt installing version 3.0 either. It will future proof you. Rather than spending 6 hours stuffing around and installing dodgy freeware utilities that may help a little bit....but will more than likely require a re-install in any case! bcl Toughest BA Turbo Lifetime Members 3,408 Member For: 22y 2m 7d Gender: Male Location: Sydney Posted 01/02/08 04:14 AM Share Posted 01/02/08 04:14 AM I wouldn't just re-install without finding out more about the problem.I have been through a similar problem with my notebook (I think about 12 months ago) that has an AMD 4800, 2 * 200gig 7500 rpm SATA drives, and use XP serv pack 2.I had a situation where the cpu activity would just go crazy, based on observing task manager.I run a software company and have some serious apps, such as a full blown Oracle enterprise system, as well as SQL Server, IBM MQSeries, several thousand COBOL programs and many other apps, so a re-install was out of the question.You can go to www.sysinternals.com and download their file monitor and process monitor software. It will tell you exactly what is going on in your machine.It could be some spyware or something odd.Also, you may have RAID software running. Open start menu, go to "Run"2. type "msconfig"3. Go to Startup Tab4. Basically deslect itms that you do not want to run at startup, I.e. auto updaters, etc. Leave things like antivirus. If you are unsure what it is, leave anything with Microsoft in the file address.5. If the RAID array was broken or was unstable in anyway, its more than likely it wont boot, more importantly it would prompt you prior to booting windows.On this note, it could be bad sectors on the hard drive, is your hard drive making strange noises? clicking, beeping, etc?
