Hi all

My computer has been running really slow lately. Its sweet for a few hours and then it just begins to take absolutly ages to do simple things, even when no programs are running. Ive checked in task manager and nothing is running, but performance meter is skyrocketing and my keybord screen now always says 27 to 30% of ram is being used even though its just idling. Then every now and then it freezes completly and takes about 2min to free up again. Ive updated windows, all drivers and the anti-virus software and scanned it but no fix. I know shes getting a bit old now but I dont really use it for that much gaming anymore (ps3) and I still think it should be good enough to open the f*cking start menu without a minute wait.

Stats are:

Windows XP

AMD 3500+ 2.21GHZ

2GB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce 6600 Series GPU

2x 200GB HDD

42inch LCD

Any ideas???

Cheers

Ray

if you've got a recovery disc (can maybe be done through windows/bios also), give that a go, I fully recover mine every three months or so, keeps it running swoit!!

If your drives partioned make sure you dont have any saved data on the windows drive then all your overwriting is the main operating system without loosing any of the data you've saved.

Make sure you do a back up of your Favorites - Email Address Book - Passwords - etc on the other drive.

If you dont have a partition or second Hard Drive go and get a cheap as chips external drive and copy paste everything you want to keep to that then Format.

she's clogged!! Happens to me all the time on both work and home computers as I always install new programs, work with large art files etc etc.

Firstly uninstall programs that you no longer use. Then go to download.com and get yourself one of those "tune-up" programs that are free for 30 day trial. Install and run it. They analyse your system and fix broken links, the registry, duplicate files and usually do a good, long hard drive optimisation.

That should improve things markedly.

Another things that slows pc's down is if they load a whole stack of programs on startup like messenger, skype, modems, cameras and so on. Try and reduce that. Also take a look at the number of fonts installed. Windows loads all the fonts so they're all ready. You really only use a couple so you can delete most of them and keep courier and times new roman or whatever.

No need to wipe her and reinstall windows - DRASTIC!@@!

You might also have a heat problem.

Open the case and check the CPU fan if it is spinning and/or clogged with dust.

Defraging the disk drive also helps.

A format and reinstall is a good option, but you will lose a lot of info unless you know what to backup.

Reinstalling windows is a last resort to fix problems!!!!! Mate id like to know whats initally starting when you boot up windows. There is a program called HiJack This, download it, its free and small, if you can, run a dump and post it here. This will tell us what is running in the background and can also show many items that the Task Manager cannot. From what it sounds like, it could be spyware related or perhaps your PC just needs to be optimised and flushing temporary files may be a go.
