Hi peoples,

Just thought id vent my issues and hope one of you has maybe had the same issue.

The car is a 2003 BA XR6turbo sedan, lowered springs, 18" wheels and not much else done to the front end. I bought the car as is height wise, so im not real sure about the suspension.

Ok, when turning the steering when the car is at low speed is creating a click which to me feels as though its coming from the steering, but im no mechanic. The car has been through 3 different work shops and none of them have found anything wrong with the suspension as yet. There is no ill feeling through the s/wheel other than the click. And the click isnt happening all the time. And also sometimes when slowing down to come to an intersection it can do it to.

The car has had the suspension replaced and everything checked and still no joy. Is there a common issue with the steering rack? Maybe a ball joint? Im just hoping now....

Any ideas would be great.

Thanks

Deaks

This is an old issue...

There's a TSB out on this. They put some thin shims in between where the steering rack bolts to the frame assembly.

Take it to a Ford dealer and get it done.

its the steering rack where it bolts to the front end.

I had it bad and I loosened and then retightened those 2 bolts and the sound went away, but a week later its slowly starting to happen again

As others have stated, there is a TSB to rectify this issue. The issue is caused primarily by a burr on the mounting face of the cross member where rack locates. To fix the problem correctly you must first ascertain whether there is a burr on the mounting face (RHS). If there is a burr around the stud you'll need the chamfer it off using a small file/rasp to make it smooth. This will require the rack bolts to be removed and the rack pulled back as far as possible of removing the rack is not possible.

Ford fit a shim in between the cross member and the rack which helps but the main thing is to get the burr out. You can put a smear of grease around the mouting face before refitting the rack but DO NO PUT ON TOO MUCH GREASE!! Retorque rack nuts to 80nm. If that doesn't fix it then you've got a problem elsewhere. I would start looking at ball joints....

My BA has been doing it since I got it, and every time I get it serviced I tell them about it, and all they do is 'tighten' the bolts and it goes away for a day or two then comes back.

They seem to be all about the quick fixes at my local dealership!
