Pulled the intake off today whilst fitting gauge senders and found a bit of oil in the intake. I'm not talking alot, but enough to collect at little at the bottom of the pipes. I'd assume this isn't normal, as it happened in old Ford Sierra XR4Ti. (turned out to be rear turbo seal). Will it be the same issue?? Any symptoms to check / lookout for?

Assuming it is the turbo, am I better off getting a rebuild (cars done 106,000 km, running 330ish rwkw) or looking to purchase new? I seem them around new for $1200-$1500 ish so a rebuild I'd assume to be about half?

Cheers

Josh

Oil in the intake of stock intaked cars is normal. There is so much restriction in the stock system that oil is drawn into the intake track throught the crankcase ventilation piping.

Oil in the exhaust side would be a drama. Before i fitted the nizprp system to my car the stock system used to collect aprox 1/2 a thimble of oil between services.

RE turbo pricing i got an exchange core (ie new compressor , bearing housing, bearings turbine wheel etc) for another member on here for around $1400.

rebuilding price depends on the level of repair reqquired. I would personally go for a new core.

cheers

Luke

:stupid:

Not sure if it's due to a restriction though. If you plug up the vent pipe like I've just had to do as I found the fitting to the crossover has snapped off then the pressure will blow out the dip stick tube along with a tiny bit of oil aswell.

off topic but relevent.

on my old kb turbo laser the breather broke shooting oil out the dipstick onto the boost controller forceing the hose off the actuator under boost causing 25psi of boost to go into my engine totally destroying it.

cheers for the replies fellas. I do hear a bit of "winding down" noise when you turn the car off which could suggest some bearings may be getting old? Cars heading into Elite for a service in a week and half so ill get them to check it out properly. This car would have seem some punishment over the years so if a turbo rebuild is on the cards so be it. As said by a smart man (who was it anyways???), You play, you pay.

BFHOON: In the Sierra (factory turbo was a Garrett T03), the C-clip broke off the arm where it connected to the wastegate and allowed full boost (35 pound plus) and kaboooom. Holes in 2 pistons, 5 snapped head bolts, head lifted off and shot flames out the side of the block. Wow, a costly mess.

Might aswell get the turbo oil supply line filter changed while Paul's checking it over.

cheers etm. Yup already pencilled in for that Adam. 105,000km service, gearbox flush, diff fluid change and general check over.

On a side note, I've gone the boost gauge and oil pressure gauge. When I install the t-piece for the oil sender unit, is it going to piss out oil or is it above the oil line in the engine?
