Dealer Or Private Seller

hi all,

ive been browsing the forums here for a while and while not being a huge car buff, I have learnt a great deal from you all and can feel myself slowly turning into one hehe

Anyways, I currently own a 94' VL Falcon wagon, and its served me and its previous owners well, but I want something new cos I dont think it will last much longer!

So ive decided I would like an XR6 Turbo :)

I'll be quick, so I was wondering, do people here seem to think its better to buy a turbo from a dealer (so u have warranties etc.) or from a private seller (where u seem to be taking more of a risk)?

Im lookin at finding a used BA MkII 4sp semi-auto. Is there anything I should look out for in the car that may indicate somethings not quite right? any sounds, tell tale visual things etc.

Also, with the new falcons due out soon, will these cars come down in price? how much do ppl predict they will drop?

Thanks for any help, sorry for the long first post :)

I'm new myself, haven't even posted to say I bought one yet! lol.

Anyway, I ended up with a BA mkII xr6T from a dealer. The car was still under new car warranty for 10 months, then 2y2m of dealer warranty, which doesnt cover as much. Most mk2's would still have some ford new car warranty left anyway, so it shouldnt matter if you get from a dealer or private.

The main reason I ended up with one from a dealer was there were only a couple for sale in SA privately, and they weren't what I was after, or they were overpriced. Plus I had a 94 VR Late model camira I wanted to trade, couldnt be bothered selling it privately.

Are you thinking of modding? If you are the warranty isnt really worth much, coz your gonna void it!!! (I'm not sure if I'll last out the 10 months of ford warranty or not...)

oh, and :hiwelcome:

:roflmbo:HAHAHAAA

Oh lordy you guys make me laugh...

:welcome2: You'll find something you like eventually. Dealers make it easier to go and see the car and test drive it, if you can put up with the sh*t dribbling out of the salesman's mouth.

You can email and SMS private sellers and usually they're pretty helpful in answering questions. It's just organising a look and a drive that can be a pain in the bot bot.

My advice is to look at both dealer and private until you find exactly what you're looking for. Just try and get low k's for a low price. Don't be fooled by cosmetic stuff that can easily be fixed, it's the mechanics that you need to really look at.

Good luck dude.

did I get my car model wrong or sthin? haha I couldnt remember exactly, I think its sthin like that....like I said, its my A-B driver, sthin to cart my bass amp and a drum kit around in :P

But yeah, dont want another wagon, I want something with a bit more balls, and sthing more fun.

xb99: modding is a good thing to think about I guess when it comes to looking for sthin with a warranty or not. I didnt think of that, I was more thinking peace of mind in case something goes wrong in the first few months of getting one. But I will consider that, because this site has definately got me thinking about all these things I wouldnt normaly have haha

theblueyjr: thanks, ill remember about the small cosmetic things that would be easy to fix, lie u say, its the mechanics that I should worry about above that stuff.

how much is overpriced at the moment for a BA MkII?

yeh mate, that's 100% right, I had my heart set on leather seats, premo sound and even a sunroof, but cars with all that stuff are either low ks and way overpriced, or high ks and not worth the risk, I ended up settling for a 5 spd low k ute, with nothing but factory 18s and the xr scuff plates, because it had the right amount of ks for my price range...

but I reckon go dealer and get a warranty, because u dunno who had it, and when its gonna die next, its too much of a risk without a warranty, and the thing with low ks is, the less the car has been driven, the less oppertunity the previous owner had to thrash it

hope this helps

:stupid:

I think you wagon is a el, not vl (vl is a commodore)

look at the auctions as well as there are some bargains to be had

I got mine from mainhiem fowles in perth, there was a fixed price sale yard inside and they sold so many cars each month that they dont over inflate the prices like the dealerships tend to do

mine is a BA mII xr6t auto with premium sound and 60k on the clock and in perfect condition for 25k
