I just watched the footage on the news with what happened at the tennis yesterday evening, now on both occasions and in the slow mo replay, both times people were sprayed the officer doing it was of to the side or or two police back and sprayed and quickly walked away. I cannot catagorically state, but it would appear on both occasions that these officers doing the spraying were not activially involved in the conversation.

Now I understand that as a police officer you have to back your fellow officers up, this did not appear to be what was happening, and was either two indviduall cases of cowardly officers or a planned tatic, either way it looked extremely poor, and whilst I support the extremely difficult job police do, this was a very poor representation, and not at all what I expect from my tax dollars.

PS mods I am entitled to my opinion, and by all means if this turns into a cop bashing thread then close it, but if it stays on topic then I would appreciate if it stayed open.

Yeah it doesn't look too good for the men in Blue when seen on TV. Surely they could have handled the situation without the need of "Capsicum Spray" :sleepystuff:

Yeah, just watched it... it didnt look good. Not as good as Williams arse, according to Rasheed.

But until you know what was being said its hard to comment. Although the cop spraying and running didnt look to good.

Theres no way u should use capsicum spray in that situation and risk innocent ppl getting caught up in it. There did not seem to be the threat from the crowd, I didnt see a punch thrown at a police man. They could have called for backup and taken away the rowdy ppl.

I think capsicum spray and tazers are used a little bit too often since theyre non-lethal (mostly) weapons.

Knowing that there is such a concept as force esculation and force must be equal and proportionate to the threat. Now you do not have to go to through every step of the force esculation model you can go from say presence to deadly force if the threat warrants it.

I ask those that saw the footage, in your opinion and based on what was shown (note that media are not a reliable source of information), did the use of capsicum spray in your opinion go throught he above considerations. I have been exposed to capsicum spray and it bloody hurts alot, and I had proper attention afterwards,. I for one do not believe that this application of capsicum, spray was warranted. I also believe that this shines very poorly on the Victorian police force, now I have some good mates in the Victorian and Queensland police force, and they and I ahve discussed recruiting issues and I believe that some of these issues with recruiting will lead to more and more poor policeing like this example.

Yeah it looked a bit out of line....but then you don't know what was being said and the media never showed much of the lead-up. It must have been dragging on for some time though as they suspended play and the cops obviously had enough dicking around and wanted to put an end to it.

So yep the vic police force may come out of it looking like thugs - but it sends the message that needs to be sent after the riots last year.

The point is, it does not matter what happened before, we saw enough to know that the level of force used was unjustified.

The Force contium has many levels, but by what I saw this is what happened.

Presence

Verbaliation (VIC Poice are taught verbal judo and used correctly its bloody effective)

Blocking

Now what we do not know was if an ultimatum was given, given that I did not see and actual arrest I doubt any such unltimatum existed.

So what justified and prompted the escalation to capsicum spray?

Why in both occassions was it administered by police officers that were removed from threat and then they both walked away quickly, tatic or cowardice?
