Hi and :tonguepoke: everybody has differnt ideas on when it is right and wrong to flash your car.. I know of a couple of cars on here that have been flashed with under 100km's on the clock and they are still going strong

I'm also interested to know, those who do suggest to 'run in' the engine, what is the best way to do this, and does it even matter?

I was under the impression that it goes it's strongest when it's first built, and then through age and natural wear and tear of the engine and the drivetrain, the thing would slowly lose power.

Is it worth gritting your teeth to lockjaw and scrating together all of your self control to NOT put your foot to the floor before you have some decent k's on the clock?

I would wait at least 3000ks so the piston rings bed in. You dont want a car that chews through oil. My car seemed to perform the best between 20 000ks and 60 000ks. I have about 90 000ks now though still going strong.

The best way to run it in is to drive it like you stole it. :wasklywabbit: nobody drives them like a nana and you certainly wont if you plan on using a flash tuner.

give it 3000 km before edit my OP only

Quite the opposite - It's performance will be better with time and Kms provided its run in well.

On both points -

Run in:

I've had 3 BF Falcons, one XR6, then XR6T now F6PhoonR, and run them all in hard, and have done 90-100,000kms in each of the first 2, and up to 3800km in the F6.

1. First 500km, drive it reasonably hard but avoid going over 4500rpm, and vary the engine speed by shifting down through gears, then accelerating, dont use the brakes to slow down, say at 100km shift to 3rd, then 2nd, then take off again. Also do standing starts and positively accelerate through the gears from 0-100.

2. 500-1500km, drive it harder and dont hold back, increase loads at higher revs up to 5000rpm, and do the same shift down and then accelerate up through the gears -key is vary the engine speed. DO NOT coast on freeways at low revs or drive in high gears under load.

3. Change oil at 1500km - Then Drive it like you stole it for next 1500kms

3. Change oil at 3000km drive it like you stole it and still a good idea to keep varying the engine speed- shift down, load it/decellerate lthen accelerate etc.

My last two had far more power after 20-50,000 then even more power at 90000+kms than new - and just kept getting better, all with this run in procedure. Its this loading and varied engine speed that beds in the rings, bearings and also provides a map for future power development. Also the FPV guys said this was good.

Tuning:

It would make sense then, as the engine itself starts to increase power and performance as it beds in (and run in continues after 5-10000kms up to 20,000kms) IMHO 5k would be a minimum to start tuning it - ensure the engines well bedded in and as the engine itself gets better, the tune then will be even better again.

Cheers

Paul

Sounds like a plan.

Thank you for the experienced info! I drive a 100k round trip to & from work each day, so this will be easy to do and I'll clock up 5000k's in 2 months.

Cheers

I would say once you have givin the run in oil the flick and you are on to a good semi or full synth oil, its time to edit. :spoton:
