Hi people,

Long time reader, first time poster. For the last year I've been saving my hard earned dollars with the goal of buying a nice xr6t. I know the cars are quick, but have never actually test driven one before. Until today!

The car was a low km 2003 XR6T.

Now what I want to ask everyone is: what were your impressions on your first testdrive? I'm primarily asking because I had an expectation that it would be gut renchingly fast and was somewhat let down.

Steping into it I was a bit cautious, getting the seat position right, adjusting the steeering column etc etc. I drove out onto the road cautiously like grandpa, up to about 30kmh-ish and gave it a quick squirt up to 70. Felt a few g's and a rush, first impressions with my friend in the passenger seat was how smooth it felt.

Feeling a bit more comfortable, we came up to a left, giving way to passing cars, I psyched myself up to floor it. This is when I felt the dissapointment. I was expecting wheelspin, or atleast a violent takeoff, but nothing happened. It was smooth, up to about 30 when boost/torque seemed to really kick in and propel all 3 of us up to 100 in a time that seemed quicker then it actually felt.

What was everyone elses first thoughts? Me and my friend walked off with the conclusion that it was a really refined smooth ride which kind of took away from the feeling of speed.

I take it these things have to be reved to 3000rpm with your foot on the brake to get the kind of take off I was expecting? :ermm:

Test drove a 2006 Mk2 T ute, was an auto which was a shame cos im lookin 4 a manual, but yer not 2 bad, I was impressed. coodnt hear that wicked flutter though so that's the 1st thing id have to get dun lol.

But yes I was very impressed, just gotta save up cash 4 insurance an stamp duty then the rest can take care of itself

Firstly :welcome2: to the site. One thing about the Xr6T is the way it delivers it's power. It is very linear and really starts to haul arse after 3000rpm with a big band of torque. As result these cars are quite deceptive and you can be doing silly speeds without realising it as it so effortless. Now a modded T that's another conversation. :ermm:

Don't forget these things wiegh almost 2 tonnes so off the line will be slow on a standard car.

Also they are faster than they feel.

Hey mate my first thought after first test drive was holy fark!!!! I tested a new bf 6spd manual though. didnt try auto and still havent. I had stepped out of a 5spd au xr6 and a vr v8 5spd. Still got the vr actually. (slow noisy rattly v8) I was happy as with the power of the stock xr6t until I modded my ute now there is no turning back. That is a total different story. You need to test drive a boosted xr6t. You need to test drive a boosted xr6t. Did I just say that twice.............??????????...Yes..... Good!

yeh, I was impressed with the drives I took in mine before I bought it, but the first couple of times I actually really truly properly fully mashed the firewall with the loud pedal, it was such a rush. there's a few niggling noises, but when you give it sh*t, all is forgiven!

can't wait for the edit box to get here and away we go!

just buy it RSK, you will not regret it one bit!!!

I did not even test drive mine before I bought it. I drove an XR8 and that sold me on getting a ford ute over a Expensive Daewoo then when I found out I could get an XR6T so cheap I almost signed the papers straight away. Then had to wait 5 days to pick it up. I had never heard a bad word about the XR6T's and it was what I wanted and I have not looked back. 12 months old and still loving it.

My first impression 5 years ago was that it was slow, but it was what I expected.

I think it really depends on what you are used to driving.

The used stock car you drove may be a low 14sec car, and quite a few cars these days are around that ballpark.

Where are you based? If you can get someone on the forum to take you for a drive in a 300+ rwkw xr6 you'll then get a understanding why so many of us are hooked.
