The difference being the subtlety of characterisation. We know the types in each, but Toy Story refrains from the heavy-handed, bang-over-the-head style used in Pets. Countless references instead of it's own original comedic touches doesn't help either, but there were one or two chuckles (that's all) achieved out of me. Clear French-influence in art style breaks it up from the Pixar/Disney fanfare, but not without direct and indirect reference to those two animation powerhouses on occasion. Not terrible, but certainly one to watch just the once. ______ Captain America: Civil War: 3.5/5 Advantage long-running series. Entering this having seen no Marvel films prior, you'd be sh*t outta luck understanding the nuances or motivations of characters who pop-up half-way through. But if you've stuck with this from the start, this is another solid but ultimately-flawed entry in the massive universe/franchise Marvel has built. What distinguishes it is it's witty one-liners and tent-pole action scenes (littered with singular shots to passively inspire awe) as opposed to genuine logic or reason (dropping an important - McGuffin - glass vial onto sand isn't going to break it, for example). What a mess. How can you get an assured director like Bryan Singer, a cast including Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Sophie Turner (Holy f*ck - is it possible to be in love with a girl's neck? Because I do now), Nicholas Holt, etc etc and still fail so badly? I reckon it's on the writing. So much is invested in the time-travel/flashback drama this series is now so invested in, that it shows how good the original one-to-three films of the franchise were. All-but-gone are the allegories of subjugation and whatnot, and here are the nonsense large-scale destruction and weak world-building usually reserved for Back to the Future II. No matter how well he (Oscar Isaac, killing it as per usual) holds a scene as a baddie, knowing it'll all be okay in the end because of films preceding it ruins any sense of suspense and threat the producers were vainly holding onto. The special effects are voluminous but below par to the point where no-one will care because no-one believes it, and the few moments it's decent are far outweighed by it's melodrama and realllllly weak efforts at humour; might as well be a Hobbit film.
