Clutch Slip

Hey guys,

Been having an issue with my car recently and I assume it is due to a slipping clutch. However, I have never had a slipping clutch so im not too sure what to be looking for.

This morning on my way to work I thought I would open it up merging onto the Monash. Hard through 2nd, hard through 3rd, hit 4th and the revs just spiked, I let off then on again, the revs went back up then settled down and I was pulling hard.

After this happened I thought hmmmm ill try something. So I slowed down to 80km/h put it in 4th and let it boost up. As soon as it came onto hard boost around 3000rpm its just spiked to 5000rpm and I was only doing about 120km/h. So I let off and kept driving.

This only happens in 4th gear when I try to accelerate from a speed less than say 120km/h. If I am cruising and want to over take someone it will stick and I will pull away nicely but on hard boost it just doesnt hold the power.

This does not happen in any other gear or at any other speed. Is it due to the load my car is under at this point?

I am trying to get in contact with the previous owner too see what clutch it has in it and when it was replaced and maybe that might give more of an insight but I do know its not the original.

Anyway let me know what you think and if it is the clutch, cool easy fix but if it might be something else any information would be great.

Thanks guys

don't fret mate, its just the clutch, it will start to do it in 3rd soon, and I'm surprised it doesn't do it in 5th.

Call mal wood, they do good stuff!

no, I'm pretty sure they are different, but if you buy a T56 from mal, he'll sell you the whole kit and caboodle.

He may even want the T5 - you never know

I think the clutches are the same for the T5 & T56, just the flywheels are difffernt. I could be wrong though.

Good to see another T5 with 300+ still going.

HAHA yeah well its going to end one day I just want to see how far I can push it. But I will get my bottom end done before I put more power into it. I think a busted bearbox is far less trouble than a rod trew me sump!!!

Oh yeah and the clutch I have is a Exedy Twin plate 12 puk clutch. Cost about $800 so im guessing its not really able to hold down this kind of power?

some clutches will fit in both a t5 and t56. the stock clutches for both boxes are exactly the same, but you cant fit an ap racing twin plate into a t5, fouls on the belhousing.. im guessing an 11" clutch wouldn't fit in a t5 either. mals 10.5" twin plate might, but I dont know.

best to give mall wood a ring!
