Now I may get flamed to hell for this :spoton:

I've got a BA Mk II with 6sp manual

In the last few weeks for some reason I've found that I keep slotting it back into 1st from 2nd while aiming for 3rd. In all the time that I've owned it, I've never done it before, yet for some reason it suddenly wants to slot into 1st on the upshift. Luckily I've not yet done it while giving it anything serious, but I'm concerned that I suddenly wants to slot back into 1st for some reason.

Is there any mechanical reason that people know of that would cause this? or do I need to lay off the beer :)

Yep - I'm thinking lay off the beer! Couldn't really be any mechanical reason for it.

Try drinking more mate.... kill those dumb brain cells and concentrate the good ones!

I you can't drive stick them sell it and buy an auto and let all us lovers drive em.

Maybe the spring is broken or whatever that shifts the selector back to the centre when it is in nuetral.

If it's not returning the stick to the center position it would take more concentration to get the right gate.

Quick test, push the lever to left and let go and then to right, if it does not self center the spring is stuffed, if it does, its you and its time to get an auto.

if your not trying to shift fast and its happening I'd say there is a problem with the springs in the shifter.

do 72's test and if it all works properly perhaps try changing your technique. f6 ute posted some vids of his technique and when I have used it I have never missed 3rd. will upload them to youtube if you like (should be able to find them) or you can do a search for topics started by him.

Basically the video shows how to hold the gearstick for each shift. Using this technique for every gearchange you reduce the chances of missed changes to almost non-existant. Most rally drivers and circuit racers learn this technique.

when changing from 1st to second - your hand should be positioned so that the open part of your hand points towards second (ie index finger at about 1 oclock- hand on top of gearstick)

when changing from second to third - hand is to left and lower corner of gearstick with open part of palm pointing towards third gear

third to fourth - straight on top

fourth to fifth - similar to 2-3 position just a bit straighter

fifth to sixth - similar to 3to4
