I’d say no.

Someone once said that “noise is power”.

With larger diameter pipes that are usually associated with a power increase you’ll normally get more noise.

There is such a thing as too big an exhaust, so pipe(s) should be sized to the power levels you require.

However, if you do go to larger pipes you can reduce the noise via larger mufflers (use 2 mufflers not one) and having mufflers packed with material that has good sound reducing properties.

It’s not just total noise, but you want to ensure there is no drone.

Noise is a very subjective issue; some people love the noise and the “look at me factor”.

I’ve been moving towards quieter exhausts over the past year. I’ve tried quite a few combinations of exhausts on the XR6T over the past 4 years. Currently I like the xforce with the larger mufflers, as it has good sub 400rwkw performance and quieter noise characteristics than most other systems I’ve come across.

Someone like Lambros at HiTech can also supply mufflers with good sound deadening properties if you want a more customized solution.

If you are in Sydney drop me a pm and we might be able to organize for you to hear the sound, then you make up your own mind.

Brian which Xforce set up are you running?

4" single dump

3.5" split dump

2 X 2.5" pipes

1 x 3" pipe

1 or 2 Mufflers

Also I have heard that the APS system which looks similar to the Xforce that is also imported is not too loud.

I am also doing some research into this field so the experienced guys like Brian would be the perfect people to listen too..

I am also looking for a hi flowing zorst which is reletively quiet during normal day to day driving under 4000rpm.

4" dump; 4" cat; 2 * 2.5" pipes; 2 mufflers; now changed tip to stock F6 exhaust tip!

Top stuff Brian thanks, I have found that this is pobably because of your success. The stock F6 tip - is that just so it looks stock to the law and innocent bystanders?

In the simplest of forms there is a way to create an exhaust that is both quiet ofr regular driving but extremely free flowing for when you are driving hard.

Sorry for my crappy MS paint creation but am not very artistic.

What happens is that you get an exhaust that is approx about standard but in one pipe size, so say these cars run twin 2 1/2 pipes, run a single 3 1/2 pipe but also another pipe beside this. When the motor comes on boost the solenoid opens the valve in the second pipe and hey presto, free flowing but louder. Normal sound when driven softly, LOUD when on boost.

This is not a new thing, Has been used for awhile on Ferrari's. If you get the chance have a look at an F430 challenge and you will see what I mean.

I hope I have made this clear enough but as have only owned a T for about 1 month not sure on some of the specs and so forth.

The unfortunate thing is that this will have to be made almost entirely from scratch so could cost some $$$

I was inspired by the F6 Nizpro conversion that BCL did and fitted the exact same exhaust with the larger mufflers. I like it. Totally quiet on highway, no drone at all. At idle it just hums away letting you know there is some serious power brewing. It will require internal wastegate mods or you simply wont control the boost with the turbo back 4" system. On first dyno run after Nizpro kit fitted, boost climbed through 17-18 psi and car was 380rwkw - too scary on stock internals. With larger swing valve, stronger actuator we settled at 13psi, 333. I have had some vibration issues with the exhaust, as its bloody fat but have these sorted now. We had to 'ease' a space under the car - that code for hit it very hard with hammer and reunderseal it but its all good now. The other tight spot is where the twin pipes go over the axle - I found that it knocled when I went slowly over speed bumps. With a small adjustment (no hammer this time) we gfixed that one too. X-Force is such good value compared to a Herrod or APS - in NZ anyway. You wont be disappointed.

The New BMW 330 turbo has the same setup they have had them for years on all there cars non turbo too.

I use the APS exhaust. Great sound and able to handle power outputs well over 400rwkw with the stock dump pipe.

It is also fully street legeal in regards to noise emissions. Not sure if any other exhausts out there have this complaince.

You can find more information about the exhaust at the autotech website here
