Bobkat,

Your views on this subject are interesting. The discussion is about fixed speedcameras, not hoons or street racing.

Fixed speed cameras serve only 2 things. Revenue and perception of action by governments. For a government they are a win / win situation. You can make money for nothing and be seen to be trying to reduce the roadtoll. It has been proven that governments rarely install them in blackspots, but where many people are known to exceed the posted limit, like downhills. Fixed speedcameras cause many rear end accidents as people are too busy looking at their speedo and not the road.

We are also being taught that as soon as you exceed the posted speedlimit, you will die. This is called speed conditioning and is extreamly dangerous. People will then always drive at the speedlimit and not to the conditions.

Your example of where you killed the pedestrian, had nothing to do with excessive speed. It was the pedestrians fault for running onto the road and not looking. Yes it sounds like an awfull series of incidents that lead to you hitting them, but did you think that IF you had been doing the speedlimit, you would have been ahead of the kids and father ?

You cannot look at that accident as a reason for not exceeding the speedlimit.

I have done numerous trackdays and held a CAMS competition license for 20 years. I do still exceed the speedlimit on the road, but only to suite the conditions. Why should I drive at 100km/h on a 3 lane highway with a center divider at 3am when I am the only car. 120-140 could be a safe speed in these conditions, but according to the fixed speedcamera, I am a criminal and will be booked regardless.

Ok good post.

1. the example I gave is relevant. It shows that even when you are doing the right thing sh*t can happen.

2. If you are not capable of driving at the posted speed limit do not drive, weather conditions permitting.

3. No brainwashing here. Try pulling bits of people from cars and washing the blood off the road. (Ex Firie)

4. It is not just you speeding but the other dick doing 140+ and you both meet unexpectantly.

4. ever hit a roo at that speed at 3 am? It is not a good look.

5. Camera and traffic offences are just that not criminal at all no matter what state you are in.

Guys take the hype out of it. It is not your right to drive like idiots. you did not get a licence for that.

I respect everyones point of view but I do not respect those that put innocents lives in danger.

Chops

Hi Dags

I have no problem with them. I do not speed.......

Never been zapped by one. Had a few blueys over the years..

The cameras catch lazy inatentive drivers. We all know where they are so whats the problem?

Myself I prefer to be looking out the windscreen , than constantly looking a the speedo just in case there is a camera lying in wait.

So you agree with me.....

I'm sure it will raise them a few $'s...but anyone that gets caught by these fixed cameras should have their license cancelled for not paying attention in the first place.

Chops,

I have many friends that are Cops, Fireys and Ambo's and one thing they all say is very few crashes they attend are due to excessive speed.

Most are due to stupidity, inattention or Drugs/Booze. The reason that speed is blamed is to give the government a valid reason to continue to fine us.

Do not think for one second that any governmnet give a toss about our road safety.

The fact will remain that people will die on the roads, no matter how slow we drive, how safe the cars are or how good we are as drivers.

What else do they not see? If they are not paying attention what other dangers could they drive into. Or themselves become the danger. Everyone has a little stuff up from time to time, just that sometimes it is in a major way.

The crims the cameras catch are a mix of lazy inattentive drivers (I.e. soccer moms daydreaming and cant drive for sh*t), outright hoons (yobbos in fooly sik gemmis that bake it up or excessively speed any chance possible) or people simply driving to the conditions - which is almost guaranteed to be 5-25kph above the limit.

The big problem is that limits are always set to allow to the lowest common denominator I.e. the sh*ttest driver on the road - to travel relatively safely...

What about everyone else? we all have to dumb ourselves down and follow the posted limit, which in all honesty could easily be 20% higher on 95% of roads. This leads to frustration and occasionally driving to the conditions rather than the posted limit which results in a speeding fine.

I agree some areas need strict speed limits like schools etc but the majority of the other limits are just too low IMO and it's only going to get worse as long as the speed kills brigade bleats their sh*t... hell going by their logic no accident has ever occurred ever by any vehicle travelling at the limit or under..
