timbo Member 33 Member For: 21y 7m 7d Location: Hobart, Tas. Posted 25/06/03 01:57 AM Share Posted 25/06/03 01:57 AM G'day guys! I've been quietly cruising this forum for a couple of months, so thought I'd better make it official! Have been a Expensive Daewoo man for the last 20 or so years (last Ford was an original XA Falcon GT I owned in the early '80s, complete with Mick Webb enhanced donk), but am blown away by how good the new BA XR's seem to be, and particularly everything I have read on the Turbo, thanks to all your posts and as much as I can find to read.....I say "read" because living down here in Hobart, there is only one Ford dealer, and they do not have a turbo for me to test drive!!! I don't know about you, but I definitely baulk at paying over $50K for a car when I can't drive it first, no matter how good everyone says they are! The local Expensive Daewoo dealer is falling over himself to sell me an SS, even knocked $5k straight off the top, but I have a mate with a GTS that is on its 3rd re-build, so no Gen III for me! The best the Ford dealer could do was let me test drive an XR8 they had on the floor in Blood Orange(very nice, had the looks, sounds great, but want to try a turbo).I travel about 30,000 k's a year for business, so I need something comfy and preferably fun to drive around these great Tassie roads! :D Have already compiled my options list (leather, sss, premium sound, tint, tow, etc), but will stick with the 17's simply because of tyre replacement costs with the number of k's I do. Biggest decision is probably the same as everyone else - colour! There aren't many turbos down here yet, but have seen a couple in Phantom and Acid Rush, also a very nice Mercury Silver with tint, 18's, and fordxr6turbo.com sticker (that you XR6TAS ?). Lotsa N/A's in Blueprint. Favourites at the moment are Venom and Blueprint, but the Blood Orange got lots of attention! This may end up being the first car I ever order without a test drive, but one thing is guaranteed...the estimated 3-4 month wait is gonna break my heart!! I agree that when you are spending $50K or so a test drive is important. At least you have driven an XR8 so you have a reasonable idea as to what the car is all about. When I went shopping for my T I didn't have the option of test driving an XR8 as they hadn't been released yet but they had a demo turbo there so that was OK. The rest is history!Have you not considered buying the XR8? Probably like me the pyschological barrier of $50K is too much to hurdle, especially for the same performance and features. jmoo2 Member 58 Member For: 21y 7m 15d Location: Melbourne Posted 25/06/03 03:06 AM Share Posted 25/06/03 03:06 AM I have a mercury silver so I guess I’m not exactly impartial but I think it’s the best colour. It doesn’t have the exciting look of the orange I must admit but I think it’ll be an easy colour to sell; that’s my opinion anyway.I didn’t have the opportunity to test drive my T either. However, I read so many reviews I thought it was safe to buy the car without a test drive, and I wasn’t wrong!Have you checked out all the reviews online; drive, rac, carpoint, carsales, etc? Each comes with their reviews bias I know but they all draw the same conclusions; great value for money.Anyway, what ever colour you decide upon, you won’t regret buying a T :D
Guest Xr6Tas Guests Posted 25/06/03 03:29 AM Share Posted 25/06/03 03:29 AM Finally another member from Tas! Was getting very lonely being the sole Tassie T owner who visited these forums! Welcome aboard Timbo. And yes that’s my Mercury Silver beast you have seen cruising around :D There aren't many turbos getting around Hobart are there! I’ve seen one Phantom ute, and a blueprint sedan. That’s it. Heaps of N/As though. I considered an SS as well (it was a choice between an SS, WRX or the XR6T for me) but after driving the other two there was just no comparison. The XR6T is streets ahead (literally sometimes ) in nearly every area. Interesting that you mention there is no turbo to test drive in Hobart as Tilford have (or at least use to have) an auto Acid Rush XR6T, complete with 18s, premium brakes, premium sound, sports steering wheel and leather. This is the car I test drove before taking the plunge and it’s what made me say "I have to have one". Do they no longer have it? Regardless of whether you get to take one for a drive or not, go ahead and buy one anyway! It’s that much a of sure bet that a test drive isn't ultra important. Many people here have ordered without taking one for a drive first.I was going to buy from Tilford, but they wouldn’t drop a cent off the price, and I was looking at a 5-6 month waiting time, so I bought from Westpoint Ford in Victoria, and brought it back on the Spirit of Tas. I can recommend Westpoint for a good deal and short waiting time, but watch out for their after sales service as I’m very unimpressed with it.Good like deciding on colour too mate. Can’t tell you how many times I went back and forward with my choice (mainly between Narooma blue and Venom) but I'm 100% happy I stuck with Mercury Silver. Hopefully we get some more Tassie T owners signing up soon so we can organise a get together one of these years
