Crushed to death in freak accident

Arjun Ramachandran

November 8, 2007 - 7:15AM

A 36-year-old man has died after his car rolled down a driveway and crushed him against a garage in Sydney's south-west.

The man parked his Ford Falcon at the top of the driveway to his home at a block of units in Cumberland Avenue, Ingleburn, about 4.30pm yesterday.

He applied the handbrake and exited the car when it began to roll down the driveway.

He tried to re-enter the vehicle, but was trapped when the car collided with a brick support pillar of the garage, police said.

"He was crushed between the car and a brick pylon," a police spokesman said.

The man had arrived home in the car alone, he said.

Ambulance officers arrived at 4.45pm and declared the man dead four minutes later, an Ambulance Service of NSW spokeswoman said.

The man died as a result of his injuries, she said.

Police said there appeared to be no suspicious circumstances, and could not say why the car's handbrake failed.

The car was seized for forensic examination and a brief will be prepared for the coroner.

I know that the hand brakes are no good on these but they are the same on dunnydores aswell.

As for this why was the car not put in park on an auto or on a manuel not put in gear.

Hopefully some good will come of it and the cnuts will be forced to issue a recall to get them fixed properly once and for all. Or train their 'technicians' how to actually do it properly.

Condolences to the family - hopefully it wasn't one of our members :stirthepot:

It's a shame it has come to that.

Don't be to quick to judge though...

It doesn't say what model it is. For all we know it could of been a poorly maintained XF.

The correct procedure is all there in the manual, all they have to do is look! You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.

Adam you are right we dont know what model car, but the brand new fords come out with handbrakes that are outside legal tolerances. I know as I have worked with many police who constantly comment on the poor handbrakes and steering whheel slopiness.
