A radial scar appearance seen on a breast x-ray can be produced by a number of breast conditions, most of which are benign (not cancer), or by a previous operation on the breast. However, some radial scar areas contain small cancers or pre-cancer changes. It is not always possible to tell on the breast x-ray which radial scars are associated with these more worrying changes. For this reason a breast biopsy (removal of a tissue sample) is usually advised. Most often an operation is needed to diagnose the cause. However, sometimes it is possible to remove the small tissue sample needed using a hollow needle (called core needle biopsy). How radial scars develop is not fully understood. It is most likely that they are part of the range of benign (non cancer) fibrocystic changes. Benign fibrocystic changes are due to normal aging or other causes. They are very common and are the cause of most cysts and non cancer lumps. If you have any questions please ask one of the assessment team or your doctor.Or pm Superdan....
