Fitting A Turbo Blanket

From my understanding, Turbo blankets are a quick way to shorten the life of the turbo. Because it traps the heat, it increases the heat exposure to the turbo and essentially overheating the metal. Constant over heating and cooling will result in premature failure of the turbo, seals or bearings.

While it does reduce the underbonnet temps, the heat is retained in the turbo and this is not a good thing.

As for the heat tape around the inlet, it would make no difference to the intake charge. The speed the air goes through the pipe will not get heated, no matter how hot the pipe was. It might make a poofteenth of difference when you start a warm car, but this would go after about 2 seconds.

While this mod might look good, it will have very little to no affect on the intake charge temp.

The best way to reduce the intake charge is a big intercooler, shortest possible stainless pipework and good free flowing exhaust, Bonnet vents, cooler thermo and bigget radiator also help a lot.

I appreciate what you say in regards to the blanket ZAP, but from my experience around turbos I haven't seen any instances of this, and I can't really see a great difference between this and the normal heat shielding or ceramic coating, it all does the same thing right? I have plenty of friends running these and it hasn't hurt them any! and as for the intake pipe, it can't make the intake any hotter so I like it, none of my engine mods have been done for looks, only what I percieve as worth while money spent.

Again, I appreciate any comments that are thrown up here, that's why its called a Forum!

That is what I did 2 years ago. I also took off the front bonnet seal as well. Super happy !!

Also keeps the computer nice and cool !

While I cannot speak from experience (having never done the mod myself) I can only quote what I have been told by several expert mechanics and tuners.

Ceramic coating is designed to pass the heat along the exhaust system and reduce the heat escape from the exhaust. It has also been known to affect the life of the exhaust for the same reasons as the blanket.

Heatshields are designed to reduce the effect of radient heat from hot metal surfaces. The heat is not really retained due to the airspaces and they are not semi sealed like a turbo blanket.

I am glad you are trying this as you are correct about this being a forum, and we may all learn a good thing )or not) from your experiences. I would try the bonnet seal mod to get the heat out as this is the ideal cheap way to do it. You could also go the fully sik mod of a few washers on the bonnet hinge to jack the bonnet up drifto style now that is ultra sik

As funny as it may sound, I was actually considering the washer thrick, used to use that on an S13 drift silvia, very dori dori!

When I get back from Japan next year, I will be getting the wastegate actuatordone and ported, while this is happening I'll get the cartridge looked at for any forms of wear, reports to be done!

LOL, love the hachi's and Initial D, the anime series was the best, there is another one called Wangan Midnight Express, I think, its on you tube, all about guuys who top speed race down the Wangan freeway in Tokyo, very cool!
