In other news, Kevin Rudd announced today further environmental policy for if he is elected PM. A blanket 50km/h top speed limit for the entire country to reduce CO2 emissions and save the planet. All vehicles will also be rev-limited to 2500rpm to reduce fuel consumption.

Drugs are for people who don't get to drive blonde chicks and drive on autobahns...

I am praying that this doesn't happen before 2009. I'm planning a little European Drive after hitting England with The Fanatics for another Ashes Series and those Autobahns are a key German attraction (plus the Nürburgring!).

Please let German pride hold onto this holy grail for a little while longer. :innocent:

LC,

having just come back from Croatia 2 mths ago which has a speed limit of 130 km

driving a renault 1.6lt wagon full to the brim

Merkel correct on no autobahn limit' - ABD

[ See related stories ]

October 1, 2007

London, England - German chancellor Angela Merkel has rejected her party's call for a 130km/h speed limit on unrestricted autobahns to reduce CO2 emissions.

Nobody, not even those asking for the limit , were claiming it was justified on safety grounds. Clearly speed is not a major factor in accidents on motorways, including German autobahns.

Merkel correctly pointed out that traffic jams produce at least as much CO2 as vehicles travelling at high speed. Indeed, a vehicle travelling in congested traffic at 10km/h produces about double the CO2 emissions of a vehicle travelling at 130km/h.

Association of British Drivers spokesman Nigel Humphries said: "The fatality rates on unrestricted German autobahns are similar to those on 90km/h-restricted US freeways and most the of UK's fatal motorway accidents involve heavy vehicles that are limited to 100km/h.

"The speed limit on UK motorways could be raised to at least 140km/h without compromising safety or CO2 emissions.

"People should be free to choose their own emissions/time balance just as they are free to decide how warm their house. Any government serious about reducing emissions should remove the deliberate congestion-causing measures that blight our towns and cities."

* Meanwhile, Chief Constable Meredydd Hughes, who is head of ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) road policing policy, has been caught speeding for the third time.

On this occasion he is alleged to have been travelling at 90mph in a 60mph limit, which leaves him facing a driving ban and a maximum fine of £1000 if convicted.

I think it funny they want to lower it to 130 to stop global warming and not to reduce the road toll. Does that mean the germans acknowledge that speed doesn't cause crashes?

Global warming is the new religion.Watch out for the inquistion.
