Hi everyone..

heres what ive done, just changed my intercooler to a process west intercooler and under battery pipe. And got my waste gate flap and actuator changed also changed the coolent and oil over, then went for a little drive down the street (driving soft) and when I pulled over I noticed that the coolent was boiling.. is this normal or not because I can't remember if it was doing this before I changed those things.

some advice would be great...

Was the coolant bubbling in the reservoir, high reading on temp gauge or could you just hear a boiling sound.

The xr6 uses a thermo syphon to cool the turbo after the engine has been shut down, you can hear it bubbling away for a awhile after.

Even when the motor is running this an still be seen. Yet dickheads still install turbo timers.

now, I've had a turbo timer sitting in my draw for awhile now, is it such a bad thing to fit it? will it be bad for the car - surely not? I bought it because I haven't owned a turbo car previously and I don't like sitting in the car for any period time when I have to go somewhere, I know you only have to be there for about 30 seconds...

The coolant was bubbling in the reservoir, the temp gauge was abit under half and yes I could hear a boiling sound..

so I shouldn't worry about the boiling sound then?

if the coolant was bubbling in the header tank you probably need to bleed the system. remove the cap and run the car up to temp at around 1500 rpm with the heater on to bleed that circuit as well. if you can park the car on an incline with the front of the car facing uphill it will help expel all the air.

once the air bubbles stop appearing in the header tank let it cool and top the coolant up to the correct level.

if you then can hear gurgling sounds when the car is shut down hot it'll be the thermo siphon effect through the turbo.

You don't have to let it run at all.... that's why turbo timers on these cars are a waste of money.

Water and oil cooled bearing.

yeah, but if the engine is turned off, the water and oil pumps stop, which will stop the flow of water and oil to the turbo, letting it spin with out constant lubrication, would that be right?

The thermo syphon continues to flow coolant through the turbo after the engine is shut down, it stops the oil from frying and gumming up the bearings.

If you have just given the car a fang, it would still be wise to let it cool down before turning it off, best way to do this is drive gently for five minutes before you stop.
