Took the pipe off the intake side of the turbo today and found a little oil there, but when I spin the blades, they move smoothly but make a bit of a whirring rumbling sound, there is also a bit of sideways movement, but not enough to rub the blades on the casing. The car has done 32,000 klm and the pipe hasn't been off before. Does this sound this sound the usual fare or should the turbo blades be totally quiet when they spin. Thanks in advance

Doc, if the blades dont touch the housing they should be fine. Ball bearind turbo always rumble because of the internal clearances required in bearings that spin at a gazillion rpm. A little bit of oil in a car with a stock intake is pretty standard. :roflmbo:

Very common to see a small amount of oil there. I've seen this on a numbers of cars, including 2 of mine.

Thanks for your help gents, good to know I don't have a warranty claim

luke, how much of a whiring/rumbling sound is too much?

I think I need an opinion from someone in the know before I book it into the shop for new bearings and new oil supply screen....

Can you hear it when you're driving or even when it's idling or only when you turn off and it spools down?

dont think its when im driving, only sounds like grinding for the 30secs it takes to spin down after shut off. can only hear the whistle when driving.

front wheel bearing noise makes it a little hard to hear too much though so I cant be 100% sure its quiet when driving.

it is a little noisier when cold, but is reasonable quiet on idle once its warm.

cheers
