the samsung lcd's do come with an inbuilt tuner.

ib, that 42" plasma you posted about on the other page with the 3.4k price tag is the one that is now 1800.

check out dtvforum.info, they have good info over there. a quick search there will give you a fair but of info.

the plasma/lcd debate is opinions only so you have to make your own mind up on that one.

I am in the same boat as you and will be making my decision in the next couple of weeks.

you will not be able to get a 1080p tv at your price point, and im pretty sure not alot is actually broadcast in native 1080p. 10 are the only ones I think, and tv have good scalers in them these days

Mate here is what I know and this comes from a self proclaimed geek and a Channel Ten technician.

Watch for TV that mention HD, they will say HD ready HD capable or any other combo. Look for the resolution, You are mad if you do not buy 1920 by 1080, any other resolution will have to adjust and suffer as a result.

Now Channel Ten in Sydney broadcast the most Native HD ie 1920 by 1080, Seven and nine broadcast a modified HD, resolution unknown.

Sony is the best brand and vcomes with inbuilt HD tuner, howevr for a lot less Samsung which uses Sony screens is cheaper but no inbuilt HD Tuner.

This is a good thing, cause you want a HD tuner with a hard drive, prefersably one with two tv cards in it. I woish I had a link to show but I dont.

AS for LCD V PLasma, it really depends on what you watch most, news, home and away, there is buger all difference in quality, were Plasma really comes into its own is sports, particulary the fast moving sports wit panning like football and cricket. These are far superior on Plasma than they are on LCD.

Hope this helps.

Scotty

Australian HD tv standards atm are 1080i or 576p not 1080Progressive (still the same resolution just a difference in the way the signal is sent) which is what they call the latest True HD.

Can we tell the difference in 1080i to 1080p? I think 1080p is a smoother image without the flicker, jagged edges.

Personally, picture quality, contrast ratio, colour saturation and colour accuracy are all more important than resolution.

Samsungs True HD (or 1080p) lcd's have inbuilt hd tuners as do some of the previous non 1080p lcd's.

Scotty is correct that the panels are produced in the same place though and from what I have seen and after calibration there is minimal difference in picture quality, even sony and samsungs technology is roughly the same (Movie Plus imaging engine, colour enhancers, Motion Flow 100hz, Bravia engine! the list goes on) just named differently.

Contrast ratios now on both are getting up there with the latest sony being 18000:1 and samsung 15000:1. These are dynamic contrast figures but still atleast now its black and not a grey black.

As far as response times go I beg to differ if you can pick up 8ms delays?

Anyway... as you can see my preference is for lcd mostly because of no burn in problems and the fact that the technology is going strong.

I just did a read in the 'sound and image' mag of a possible 'Super Hi-Vision' 4320p that's 7680x4320 pixels. Fricking Hell!

Go the future and hurry up I say.

Very interesting KS.

I thought it was sony that uses the samsung screen, then again I thought it was most LCD's.

Adrian

Yeah the bloke at the shop said this as well, that Sony uses a samsung made screen and go for the Samsung as its cheaper.

Sony Xbr series panels do not have any issues displaying fast moving materials. They run PS3 games which run at 60fps with no problems or assocaiated ghosting and blur.

However for movies plasma has the size. The 65inch panel is currently the king of the crop.

The current LG models dont suffer from this problem anymore, well apparantly. It was more common in models pre 2007. PDF file attached explains.

No I didnt have a problem with the TV freezing on a channel like in that article. It let off a loud crack and there was no picture only sound apparently the x,y board carked it.

I dont know everything about TV's but I have a very close friend who is both a whole sale supplier & sets up large scale visual operations e.g. flight simulators, large corporation multi office Conferencing.

As I am in the market to get a large Tv he told me to get one of these http://www.hitachi.com.au/fullhd/

I think the key to these TV's are the fact they are full HD 1920 x 1080

They apparently have just been released in Australia & I'm not sure if retail can get them yet.

full hd will never be around 2k. ib dont get too hung up on 1080p, as unless you have the hd dvd addon or blueray, everything will be upscaled anyway.

1366x768 is still a good resolution.

I'm currently in the hunt to upgrade my 42" to a 50" and so far there's a few brands that have really stuck out for me.

Looking at the panasonic PZ700 (full HD), or the PX70A (HD). Prices for the PZ are $4999 advertised, but the best I've got down to so far is $3995. Best price so far for the 50" PX is $2650.. picture looks awesome, but it's not full HD. I'm not overly fussed on full HD just yet, as I don't expect to buy blue ray anytime real soon.

Also thinking of the new pioneer 508XDA, although not full HD, it has an awesome picture, plus comes with 5yrs manufacturers warranty, plus installation by pioneer. At RRP $5699, it better be good! Haven't got a price yet, but have heard others getting it down to around $4500 without too much haggle.
