AFR has nothing to do with emissions.. Only the ratio of air / fuel burnt..

The emissions are tested with a 4(or 5 gas?) analysis fo measuring gases like CO2 O2 CH4 Co H2 Et0H..

Fuel mixture only plays a small part in this.. the main tricks are fring off the cat earily, and getting to operating tempreture.. this is done more via spark control rather than fuel control..

Tuning for emissions vs Tuning for power are 2 different things.

Sure, you can get the car tuned, and adjust it b ased on what a 4 (5) gas analysis shows, but there's a art to tuning for emissions.. ohh and a $2800 fee to get it tested and a report generated you can throw in cops faces when you get pulled up... (ohh and if you fail the test... expect to pay another $2800)..

NOX is the important gas too I believe... (oxides of nitrogen)

This can be reduced by allowing more EGR... Ohh and this is what costs power.. so I'd say most tuners disable this (the capa generics do)

I see, so is it possible to have an EPA invioromental tune in the box, shpuld it ever be needed, or is this cost prohibitive and outside most tuners abilities?

OK we are outside of my mechanical knowledge on this one, Headsex, what would YURPV4 have to do to pass the emmision test. Does he indeed have to return it to stock?

Appreciate the informative feeed back to.

Beyond tuners abilities for multiple reasons..

A Emission "Tuner" charge a hell of a lot more

A 4 gas analyser is quite expensive, especially modern ones which simulate the test that the EPA does..

Actually, the test isnt done at idle, there's a 25km/h test and also a 40km/h test

I've been looking into this of recently as I know someone whos tuning a Supercharged VE 6 litre for emissions (as well as power)..

Really, this is one things that's been massively overlooked.. As soon as ANYONE flashes any tune, being generic or custom tuned is outside emissions...

Easiest and Cheapest -> STD Injectors, STD Tune, STD Exhaust, and STD Airbox (no pod).. I believe the Intercooler shouldnt effect it..

Expensive and technically correct -> Car needs to be dynotuned for hours with a 4GAS..

As I dont know exactly What effects what gas in a 4 gas (I'm still learning) its hard to say what needs to be done..

and to stop them picking on YPURV4, Put higher suspension in it, remove the custom plates, and make the car look like standard

Ohh Mike.. a hint, Remove the "headsextuned" sticker also.. LOL EPA might ask why the cars tuned..
