I have the same problem!!! you hit boost & there is a bloody tapping noise.

Some one told me it was the Solenoid, but considering everyone seems to have a manual with this problem maybe there is a link???

Please keep me in the loop if you find the problem as I posted this issue a few weeks ago & no one has come back with an answer.

My car is still under warrenty so I will be taking it to them as soon as I blow the dust of the XR & take it down.

bent rods is a bit extreme, straughsberry bent some rods, ask him what the sound was like

Without it being dismantled, it seems more likely to be a whole/cracked piston and/or smashed ring lands. It starts and runs but ZERO compression in 1 and very little in 5. The sound was like 4000 tappets in need of a little bit of oil.

Mate ..does it make the tapping noise when you release the pedal? If not it is highly unlikely to be the big end bearing. Is there a knocking noise like a hammering ?If not it is not the main bearing.

A damaged rod /bearing makes a knocking noise when you release the pedal .Accelerate and release the throttle...you will hear tap tap tap. This will be intermittent .If the car is stationary apply throttle will make the sound reappear again. Then release one spark plug at a time and repeat the test .When you dont hear knocking then you have found the damaged cylinder.

Check the exhaust shield..the fan assembly ,the radiator bolts are tight and that any after market intake is not hitting the inside of your bonnet.

Hope this helps

Stav

3rd cylinder- 198

4th cyclinder- 195

5th cyclinder 196

isn't that compression a little high for a turbo car?

I had a rattle that developed higher in the rev range, ended up being a loose gear stick.. I'd check it just incase its something that simple..
