finally got my dirt bike today, been stuffing around for months.

bought an xr400, its a 2000 model (red ferrings), but had a full gasket kit through the gearbox, and a complete top end rebuild recently, got it for $3800. I had my heart set on a wr450, but it was a couple of thousand more than I wanted to spend, and I feel much more comfortable on the xr with the lower seat setup, my feet touch the ground almost completely. I rode an xr250 a while back, and I thought it was crap (too small) but this is a bit higher, and lots more power so im happy.

I'll probably outgrow it in a week but I'll see how I go.

bought it from a guy in brisbane, just out of the trading post, went to school with my cousins in stanthorpe, and his dad went to school with my dad and brother. small world. he was telling me about riding in killarney, and I said im from out that way (stanthorpe) and he said which street, and I told him, and he said whats your dads name heheh. gotta love country towns.

anyways, anybody know some good spots on the gold coast to go? I know about ormea, but I dont know where the best spot to get into is.

Its not registered at the moment, but I'll register it over the coming weeks.

Cheers

Looks like it's in good nick. Should be some fun for the weekends

yeah its does from the picture, it does have plenty of scuffs though, hasnt been registered in years so its been a bush basher, older guy owned it, hes upgrading to a 525 ktm or an xr650.

I reckon I'll probably put the 450 big bore kit in it with the sleeve, its got good power, but not the scary power of a wr450, I want somewhere in the middle, dont want to kill myself just yet hehe.

Nice choice.

The old Xrs don't go like the modern day 4 bangers ( WRs, etc) but they are bullet proof and a good choice if you haven't been on a bike for a while. Bikes like the WRs can cost a lot to run and are very high maintenance.

yeah well I was tossing up between the DRZ400 the XR400 and the WR450 / 426 / 400. having owned pretty much every different kind of brand bike you can buy in the past, the one I found the best (the best quality / made etc.) was the Honda CBR 250 Blade replica that I had. I found kawasaki bikes cheap, and yamahas only a tad better, but the honda was like the mercedes benz of bikes from what I could tell.

I read some reviews saying that people were dissapointed with the power of the DRZ400, even though it was one of my favourites, I thought I didnt want something that rode like a 250. so I figured the XR400 would be in between the DRZ400 and the WR450f somewhere.

every review I can find of the XR400 says "bullet proof" somewhere. the seat being a tad lower than the wr450 was a big decider too, im 6ft tall, but even on a 450 im on my toes when at a stand still, if not one leg on a lean. theres an electric start kit available in melbourne I might try and get my hands on.

The old XRs are hard to kill. I would have bought a WR but the XR will not disappoint

well I paid $3800, so for that I would have only got a wr400, so out of the two I'd choose the xr. but the wr450 would have been another 2 grand at least, and with the mrs winging at me constantly I thought I'd find a happy medium.

I only told her I was looking at the bike today, she wasnt happy when I parked in the driveway with it strapped into the back of the ute heheh.

friggin women, they'll never understand!!!

I just sold my WR 450F with all the goodies,Rebuilt engine and head and registed too.$5000

They are higher maintaince and there are heaps of hand grenades out there too.The guy who bought mine is laughing cause there will be nothing to spend for awhile except oil, tyres and usual moto stuff.Mine did 10k,s too before I had to rebuild it.

Good luck with your XR400.They are a solid bike.Just a bit to solid for me.lol

You wont be disapointed with the XR.

Fantastic in the tight stuff and very tractible power.

Nowhere near as fatigueing as my 426.

You will find that you can ride it for longer and faster!

Cheers Paul
