Hi guys. This is my first post, I am looking to buy an xr6t ba mk1 ute this week. The only problem is it has the dreaded t5 gearbox. Now my question is how long do you think the t5 will last with no mods except maybe a pod filter etc.

Later on I might go to the t56. I would buy a mk2 now but just can't afford it.

Thanks for any help you can give me thanks heaps guys.

Mate do yourself a favour and save some more money for the 6 speed manual.

The 5 speed will hold up with stock power, but only if you treat it nice. Mine lasted 18 month of hard drivign, but no launches or flat changes. I also had Unichip (221kw) then Edit (249kw) that did not help the cause. The clutch died with the new owner as did the box I believe.

Upgrading from the 5 to 6 speed will cost you over $6k, so it is better to try to find a 6sp from the begining.

Save your dollars and go the MKii, you will save yourself a lot of pain and suffering in the long run.

You could always slum it and get a MKi auto, it should be around the same price.

Yeah the 6sp is deffinately worth the extra effort mate! I had an xr8 mk1 and the 5 speed was dog sh*t the dreaded 2, 3 shift felt that slow I could of had a coffee in between. Now I have MK11 xr6t t56 and could not be happier, the clutch held on to about 270rwkw. I have bee running 354rwkw with Mal wood option 5 for over 6 months with no problems.

MK11 turbos aren't that much more just search around and wait till the orion arrives which will make them even cheaper. The money saved purchasing the 6sp box could give you over 300rwkw with the right combo.

Good luck mate

Cheers Alf

In the long run it will cost more to buy the MkI and then convert it to a six speed rather than buy the MkII straight up.

Save for another month or two and get the T56 equipped ute straight off the bat.

Cheers. another option I have been thinking about is getting an xr6 and then turboing it later down the track. are there turbo kits avilable and how much do you reckon it would cost to install. My budgets really tight.

Thanks guys

Again, this option will cost you more in the long run. You would be better off borrowing money for an XRT. The interest paid on the difference would still be cheaper than the cost involved in trying to mod an N/A down the track.

You may also run into poblems like insurance availability, even registration depending on the state you live in, due to the level of modification from standard, even though Ford has released the same thing from the factory.

It really will work out a lot cheaper and easier in the long run if you hang off until you can afford it.

Save your money and buy a stock XR6T with a 6sp manual. If you can't afford it now, bide you time and wait a few months. The prices will start to drop once the new model comes out. Rome wasn't built in a day. You will get there eventually.
