Battery bike does 1/4 in 7.68

December 2007

A battery-powered motorcycle aptly named the KillaCycle has become the first electric vehicle to cover a standing quarter-mile (400m) in less than eight seconds.

The Killacycle crew was trying out a new 27x10" M&H Racemaster slick rear tyre at Pomona raceway on November 10 and the bike sped past the stands making no more noise than a high-pitched wine from the motor and a growl from the rear tyre.

Owner and crew chief Bill Dube said: "I knew it was a fast run but we all were blown away when the board lit up with 7.82sec at 168mph (269km/h).

"The spectators didn't clap or cheer, they all let out a reverent and low-pitched 'whooooa' when the board lit up they were as awed as we were by what they'd seen."

Dube describes the Killacycle as a giant cordless drill on wheels.

It's powered by 1210 small "nanophosphate" cells connected to produce 9.1kWh of electricity at 374V; pre-heated, they can supply 1800 amps.

Two direct current motors produce 110kW each and, because an electric motor produces maximum torque instantly, the whole 220kW is connected directly by a chain drive to the rear axle; all rider Scotty Pollacheck has to do is switch on and go!

The 300kg bike accelerates from 0-100km/h in less than a second; it can make seven full-power quarter-mile runs on one charge and recharges in less than four minutes.
