Went shopping last week for furniture with a 500 budget, and came home with a 1200 mountain bike... Life looks different under 200kmh and I am loving it.......

Giant or Trek.. Only 2 brands under 1000 bucks you will get quality and if they offer you disks, make sure they are hydraulic and not cable..... You need 24 gears and min 55/58 tyres...

Front shocks should be fully adjustable (whilst riding) and alloy. or fibre cranks....

Can I suggest 2007 model downhill racer jump bike.... Keeps da Blonksta from going insane

http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/2008/...ail/jack/jack2/

Check the specs and the details, they talk US dollar, but you can buy 1 for 1 US for Au at the moment if you shop......

Ive Decided on the Giant Alias for $1000. Front and rear hydraulic disc brakes and 27speed with front rock shocks. Salesman says I dont need to spend anymore on something I wont need and I agree. This model and its components are all upgradable if I need to at a later date.

I ride bikes, have a few in garage, my fav is my santa cruz, bit out of your pice range, but the best bikes on the market by far for quality and value for money would be giant. If I were you I would be focusing on the shocks and gears, and as has been stated if u get discs, make sure ar hydraulic. You should only get a hard tail also, as are heaps easier to ride on the road, and lock out front shocks are unreal, and if you dont get them u will regret it, trust me I do everytime I ride lol. The bike market is a buyer market and there are huge varieties for between 500-1k, so if u go with a reputable brand you should be fine

I just bought a bike and it has cable operated discs. Whats the problem with having them over hydraulic. I dont need to lock the front brakes up so I flip and I dont do rock climbing so what other reason do you need them on a bike?

Just curious.

Cheers

Just the fact fact that you don't have to adjust the hydraulics like you do cable. They also have better feel imo.

Mate I wouldnt be worried if I were u, unless you are intending to ride on some reasonable steep terrain, and even still your cables will be good enough, just make sure you maintain and check the cables. You are getitng all the benifits of discs so you made a good choice there. The hydraulics are good for a few reasons, they are more reliable as it is harder for dirt etc to get into the lines, where cables are open and exposed, hence why maintainence is essential and if done you should be fine, hydraulics are good if you are doing heavy braking often, more reliable and again less likely to break. Hydraulics require less effort from your hands on lever to get adequate braking, which might not sound important, but if you are breaking heavily for long periods you will be glad. IMO though you shouldnt be worried, your cables sound more than adequate for your purpose, and for most riders uses. The size of discs and quality of pads are also heaps important so check out those. Hydraulics are also more expensive, so that's a draw back, so if they arent essential you may get away with cables. I personally only run front hydraulic disc brakes and run rim brakes on the back, so if you ride sensibly you should be sweet with whatever brakes you have.

You have made a good choice there, nice bike. Giant is best value for money, and also people tend to forget specialized, can be expensive but good bikes and a mate just bought a diamond back and I was suprised with how good the bike is. Also second hand bikes, like cars are great value, more so with bikes, as people decide to get into the sport then change there minds, and sell an almost new bike, on the cheap, so if u know what your looking for this can work out. Trails in sydney I not sure mate, I ride in wollongong mainly atm, but I will ask around, have a few mates who might know, but I am sure there will be a guide on the net, or the local bike shop, where you get the bike from shoud tell you. Congrats and enjoy the bike

PS: By gloves before u go bush, or u will regret it
