A strange problem that has cropped up with my car in the last couple of days...

I noticed the other day, when I turned my car off that the fan had be running. (I heard the fan shut down, when I turned the car off)

Next time I drove the car, I noticed that the fan had come on again... Straight away I looked at the temp guage. It was sitting at half. It never sits at half so I was a bit concerned. It always sits right on 1/4. I kept a close eye on the guage and noticed that it was fluctuating between 1/4 and 1/2 and that the fan was on... Not good, I thought - especially considering I was going down to the snow the next day. So on Saturday morning I was heading down to the snow, keeping a VERY close eye on the gauge the whole way. It was raining and about 6 degrees and the temp gauage was sitting on half way. I was very worried by this stage as it started to creep up to 3/4!!! I pulled over, thinking it was going to boil. I checked all the lines, radiator, and pump and came up with nothing. The coolant was full and the water was not boiling in the radiator or the lines... hmmm, I thought - could it be a problem with the sensor?? I let the car cool down and then continued on my trip. I was seconds away from turning around and heading home for fear of iminent meltdown, when I noticed the guage flicking back and fourth between 1/4 - 1/2 - 3/4... Yep - sensor I thought....

To cut this long winded story short - I went to the snow, had a great time, came back to sunny Canberra and took it straight to my old man (who has been a mechanic for the last 40 years) and he couldn't work out what was going on. I then took it to my mate, who is an auto-electrician and he couldn't figure out what is going on either. So Monday morning I booked it in with Ford. The service man also had no idea what what was going on (not only with my car, but life in general...)

So next week Ford are looking at it.

My question is: (after reading that novel) has anyone else had the same issue? I love a bit of speculation so throw it out there...

Thanks guys.

No.... But good luck, usually ford wont fix anything unless it happens in the 12.5 minutes they look at the car..

Gold!! That's what my Dad said! And the dealer in Canberra has a particularly bad rep...

Hmmm, anything to do with the thermostat? Maybe a blockage some where?

We couldn't find any obvious ones... let's see if Ford can pick any up. I'm definately interested in finding out what the issue is... although Ford spoke to me like I was a two year old and knew nothing...

If its fluctuating when the fans cut in i'd be looking for an earth fault first and foremost. Have a look at the connections on the temp sensor and also on the fan relays. Might pay to check out the earth circuit for the instrument cluster but since it only seem to affect the temp gauge i doubt that would be it.

Just under half is quite normal for a stock car. Those with the cooler thermostat that're running non-factory tunes typically see just over quarter on the analog dial.

Take the theromstat out and boil some water in a jug, Put the thermostat into the boiling water and see if it opens, if not, its stuffed. other than that, good luck with it, hope you can find it.

Good idea for the weekend!

I usually fix all my own cars, but considering this is my first car still under factory warranty its kind of a novel idea for me, just to take it to Ford and say "FIX...." I wonder if they will say anything about all the aftermarket bells and whistles under the bonnet...?!?! :roflmbo:
