howdy all,

I'm a new member on this forum and just thought I'd say hello and ask for some advice.

Well after over a month of looking I've finally found the xr6 T that I've been looking for. I've found a late 03 xr6 turbo with just over 50,000kms and a whole bunch of extra's, including a haltech computer, and a claimed 230 or so RWKW. Agreed price is around $23000.

I saw the car yesterday and its quite clean inside and out, problem is that when I went to see it the guy said that the haltech computer needs retuning coz he hasn't been driving the car regularly enough, so when I test drove it we kept it at a slow smooth pace without giving it too much oompf coz he said it would conk out and die. He said he's taking it to his mechanic tomorrow to get it re-tuned for me and we agreed that I'll test drive the car later this week and if all goes well I've agreed to buy it. I just wanted to know, could this issue of the haltech needing retuning be a serious problem that he's not telling me about or is it common that they need retuning every now and again? Also, should I be worrying about the auto gearbox at all with that kind of power? I've heard they can take that kind of power with no problems but just wanna make sure.

Thanks a lot guys, I look forward to being a member of this forum and building up my car as many of you on this forum have.

Haltech's do not go out of tune if you do not drive them.

I would be a bit sus as there could be other problems that he is not telling you about.

Get a professional inspection as any modded car needs extra attention when being bought.

I'm surprised someone would actually take the time to wire up a new loom for the haltech when you could just use a flash tuner!?

Its an 03 so it was probably modded before the edit came out.

Get it looked at before you buy it.

If its in good nick toss the haltech and get it edited.

Sorry to say but I'd be really really sus.

My car wouldn't rev over about 3 grand for about a week before I broke a rod and needed a new engine.

I'd steer clear, there are other cars around for that sort of money, make sure it's not a 5 speed manual though.

Nah, I don't go for that BS about WHY he needed a retune.

Sounds more likely all the good stuff has been removed, and now the tune is stuffed.

Maybe I'm too suspicious, but when money is involved......

May be a great car, but also may be a huge number of skeletons in it's glovebox. :bookworm:

I'd be looking around a bit more - my 2 cents.

GOOD LUCK!

I think Power has probably hit the nail on the head.......if your gut is saying something doesn't add up walk away, there are plenty more turbos out there.

thanks a lot guys. I appreciate the quick responses. I've been looking for over a month now and like I said, this car is quite clean and has a whole heap of extras not to mention ther low kms. Well I think I'm gonna get it checked out by an nrma approved vehicle inspector sometime this week, he'll be able to tell me if anything is wrong with it.

Grrr I've been looking for so long and I'm dying for an xr6 T already. Oh well I'm sure whats meant to be will be.

Oh and yes I am staying clear from the 5 speed manuals as I plan to mod my xr6 T when I get it and know the autos are a bit tougher. Thanks again guys, I'll keep you posted on what happens with this car.
